Thinking of buying a big baler, heard some bad things about new holland and don"t now much about Krone.Considered a John Deere, any info would be appreciated. The reason I"m looking at these brands is because the dealers are close to home.

HESSTON in reply to Kenny Graves, 03-09-2007 18:13:05
I run a Hesston. After running my 4800 Hesston I would not consider another brand. All Hesstons have a very similar design(except 4700) that has changed very little over the years. The main change has been adding a electronic monitor/control and replacing the 200 drive chain with one huge gear box. These are minnor changes in terms of the bale quality and performance. New Holland would be a distant second. There is to many things to break on them. Hesstons are much simple in design. I considered a Deere, before buying my Hesston. My Hesston is ten times the machine compared to a Deere. Deere was a very cheap version of Krone. Deeres lack a stuffer and double knotters. Both of these are must haves, not just options. As previously stated new Case-IH balers are New Hollands. The old were Hesstons. A quick way to tell the difference is that the Hesston made balers have sharp square tin ware. The New Holland made balers have round fronts. I think Hesston has something like 75% market share. If buying a Hesston I wouldn't worry about dealers being close. I don't have a Hesston dealer closer than an hours drive that has ever even seen a big square baler. I fix mine myself and get my parts from either Livingston Supply in OK or Maize Corp in KS. Note that I live in Iowa. Can't say enough good things about the mechanics' advive from Livingston Supply. I perfer the 4x4 bales for my own use. There are half the bales to handle and they hand feed as good as 3x3s. If your planning to get a new baler then I would get a 3x4 4790. 3x4 bales truck better and the balers are higher capacity than either 3x3 or 4x4 balers. How many bales a year are you planning to do? Are you going to do custom work? Shout if you have any questions.

I agree with Cliff. Hesston is top of the line when it comes to those big balers. A neighbor has had a Hesston for 5 or 6 years and he hasn't had any trouble. Case IH offers one, but it is a Hesston.

Actually since about '02 the Case IH balers have been built by New Holland but before that they were Hesston's.

A Hesston would be my first choice in big square balers, they have over 80% of the market share which say's alot about the quality of their balers. I would avoid the Deere 100, they are cheap but there is a reason for it. I think the Krone's are good balers but I'd make sure you have a good dealer before buying one.

I don't know anything about the big square balers but after much research I am planning on purchasing a Krone round baler. From what I understand the Krone stuff is high quality and is well thought of. I have read that the Krone Square balers are one of the best. Have also heard that Hesston has a large portion of the large square baler market as Krone also does.
