There was a picture of a J.I. Case Plow Works walking plow in the implement photos the other day; might help put you on the right track. Go to "Implement Photos" at left, then type "J.I.Case" in the search box.

Anybody know what the story was between the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company and the J.I. Case Plow works? I have an old magazine article from the 1920's, and on the back of one of the pages is an ad for implements from the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company. They made a point of saying "we want the public to know that ours are NOT the plows manufactured by the J.I. Case Plow Works." Was there some kind of acrimony that caused a rift in the company, or did somebody else start a new plow company to try and cash in on the Case name and fame?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

The J.I. Case plow company was started by the son-in-law of J.I. Case. It was bought out by Massey Harris. The J.I. Case threshing machine company bought the J.I. Case plow company name from Massey Harris so it would never be used by anyone again. Also get this. John Deere and Leonard Andrus were in partnership. The name of that company was the Grand Detour plow company. Later Leanard Andrus worked for the J.I. Case plow company. Because "but not really known if this is true or not" that Leonard Andrus my have helped John Deere make the first steel plow in 1837, J.I. Case also used the year 1937 as its centennial and called their plaws centennial plows.

Wow -- thanks for the info! Seems like there has been a lot of wheeling-and-dealing in the tractor & implement industry right from the beginning, not just in recent years...

Like I tell my wife when she gets involved in her genealogy research: Dig deep enough, and you'll wind up being your own grandmother!
