IH No. 37 Disc Blades??

The original blades on my IH No. 37 disc are "Flat Center". I have heard they can be replaced with standard concave blades. Are the spools compatible with the standard concave blades? Anyone have experience with these? Also, any comment on notched versus smooth blades or a combination?

I tried to put regular concave blades on a 4' Cub disk, they don't fit against the spools right, so I wouldn't use them. I was scared no matter how much tightening I did, the blades would slip & wear on the axle or I would break the spools. The blades were cheaper to get from JD then the IH dealer... but like I said, they don't work. IH had the notched blades cheaper then the smooth blades, so I ordered them. I hope you have better luck then me.... it cost me nearly $250 for 16 blades from IH!!!!! What was I too do.... I couldn't find flat centers with that size axle anywhere else.

I agree with Leroy the 9 gauge will give years of service. It makes no difference which style you put on either will fit fine.

I have a 370 with the flat centered discs,I had a 37 with regular disks. The flat center ones cut better than the regular concave disks because they have thick centers and thinner edges, they also are stronger than the regular. The spools will work with either disk as the spools have a ridge on the outer edge that they mate to,conave not a flat surface. The notched blades cut deeper than regular but make sure they are the heavier guage if regular concave or they will crack or break out the center.If you want to cut best put cutaways front and rear but expect it to pull 1/3 harder.Mine has 20" blades, cutaways front only, will go all the way to axle in spring first pass, second pass I have to run wheels down or I can"t pull it.I used it to disk wheat stubble this fall and it went up to axles 2nd pass with wheels up.

Go with the 9 guage and not the 11 guage, We had them, the regular concave blades, 18" on our No. 37 disk on the front and the flat center on the back with no problems, present owner is still using like that

my first thought was it would depend on the diameter of the spools, but after thinking about it i would only go back with the flat center disk. i think it would be hard to keep the disk tight because they would have a tendency to want to flatten out the disk between each spool. as they did that it would allow for some slop in between the disk and spools. also was wondering if the spool only touched a smaller portion of the disk would it put a lot of pressure on just a small portion of the disk and make it more likely to break.

Will the flat vs.the concave change the distance between the cutting edges of the discs.if not I think it would be OK.The cutout discs penetrant easier in harder unplowed soil.When I was young in the 40s we flat bottomed every thing before we tandem disced with a 10a McCormick Harrow and a drag made of heavy beam useing two eye bolts to pull and get it real smooth.CENTAUR
