Tires for IH plow

I bought a two bottom IH plow with ruined tires all around. The main tires were old car tires. I asked around a little about what was original on old plows and was told they were delivered to the dealers without tires and that it was standard practice to use old car tires. Does that sound right? I am planning on fixing this up original and trying to paint it accurately, but still will use it on occasion. I really want it to look original.

Gene, I got a JD 555H that had old worn car, trailor tires. They were shot. I put on trailor(rear wheel), Implement(land) and aggressive tread car tires on it. Works great but a cost almost as much as the plow did.

My dad set up plows one winter in 50s for dealer. Yes they were delivered without tires. Also if ground was wet and a little smery or ocasionally when plowing clover the lift wheel would slip because they only used worn smooth car tires they would put tire chain on that wheel.

Gene, what you were told is exactly right. In addition to that, the plow could have been ordered in with either 15" or 16" wheels, and there were also a couple of options for all steel wheels. Most of those plows were ordered in with 15" wheels, because used tires in that size were easy and cheap to find.

Gene, on all the ones I have ever sen the tires where car or truck tires. I have an Oliver 2-16 plow and it has truck mud tires on it. You want a agreessive tread on the side that withs the lift or it will just sldie on the ground and not lift as it should. A lot of the steel wheeled ones I have seen have bolts sticking out of the wheels so they will bit in and work the lift

Gene I have a 3 bottom little genius plow I dont know how old the tires are but they are old, and they are old truck tires. They were on it when I got it 20 years ago. One tire on mine is a mud grip tire on the side the cam lift is on for traction to operate the lift I suppose. I have never even tried it to see if it works, I have always used it with a cylinder. It does a great job of plowing.

Thanks for all of your replies. Guess I"ll go look for some old truck or car tires. I"ll just try to stay away from white walls or white lettering! Try to find something that would look as near to the right time period as possible.

I saw old"s post a few days ago about a guy at Camdentom MO. who has a lot of old molds for obsolete tires, that was good to know.
