Should I restore JD#8 sickle mower and sell it?

I have a JD #8 sickle bar mower and was wondering if it would be worth fixing up like new and try to sell it to a collector for big bucks? Or should I say screw it and put it behind the barn.

I think it would be very unusual if you found someone whom didn't know thay made a lot of #8 and #5's and was an avid collector. I have a #9 and significanlty less of these were made than the #8's, and still wouldn't attempt to make a profit by restoring. Bought a complete #9W from the junk yard for $25 which needed a new sickle, but had the upgrade housing and married it to the #9 I owned. Made one that was very good. Gave away the remainder of the parts to someone whom intended to use the internal "guts" to repair a #8. Don't know the outcome, he may have chosen to just rebuild as a #9.

Just an opinion. I have a number 8 and a number 5. I have used the number 8 for the last years and the number 5 before that. For a collector I think I would choose the #5. As a user I like the #8. Not sure you can really ever fix up and implement and get your money out of it. A lot of collectors don't seem to care too much what is inside of an implement, it is more just to show with the main focus, the tractor. I may be all wrong but seems like at least in my part of the country implement collection as a separate hobby has not really caught on. If it was a plow that corresponded to the year of the tractor it might be different. There are much handier mowers to hook up than the #8.

I think your right hayfarmer, I was hoping a tractor collector would say, that would look great on the back of my JD. The owners manual shows it on a JD 730. I know about putting a ton of money into something when you fix it up. I payed 10 bucks for my potato digger and each quart of paint was $10. I dont even want to think about how much money I have into the disk Im working on.

I purchased what I am told is a #8 for $100. It is missing the pitman arm and the sickle bar is fairly rusted.

You can see it on Ebay, item 330078481102.

I didn't know at the time it wouldn't hitch up to a 3pt.

I need to get rid of it. If you can use it for parts, etc. I will gladly give it up to make room for one that will work for me.

I looked at the one you bought and its not a #8, I think it may be a 5. I would like to have it but its a little to far for me to drive.

On both the No. 8 and No. 5 mowers the back end of the frame is carried on a single caster wheel, no caster wheel on this

If you look at my original forum from 2/27, a number of people helped to identify what it is, or what it might be.

The mower is actually in Va now. I live in Eastern Pa and travel to Va regularly, going down the I81 or RT15 corridor.

Does that help you any? I also go up to NY state on occassion.

I have the original owners manual for it and everything is there. It works as it is and doesnt have much wear. The reason why I would want to sell it to a collector like in the JD 2cyl club would be to get a really high price for it. I will keep it if I cant get much money for it. I think I will put it on ebay and see what happens. If I dont sell it then I will keep it for a year and see if I use it or not then I will decide if I want to get rid of it.

Mike, Don,t know much about that sickle mower. Is it pull behind? My tractor has no pto or hyrdauliccs but I am looking for pull behind type implements to play with.A plus is that I am in Virginia too. If it fits I don,t mind paying a fair price.

You might consider getting an operator�s manual. The manual will help you determine how �complete� your mower is and any optional parts it may have. The more complete your mower, the more it is worth to either a �worker� or collector.

I agree with RustyFarmall, offer it for sale as is and let the buyer do the work. If your mower is functional, it will be of value to both the worker and collector.

As a worker I would want to know the condition of the pitman, knife, and tail wheel tire and tube. I need to determine if the mower can be attached to my tractor and put to work immediately.

As a worker-collector I would replace the pitman, knife and tail wheel tire and tube regardless of condition. The mower will be dismantled completely and repaired/refurbished ( please note that the word �restored� is not used ) to as you said �like new� condition. Then the mower would be put to work as it was designed.

The collector can dismantle the mower and restore it to whatever exposition quality they desire.

If you don�t get any buyers for the complete mower, don�t screw it and put it behind the barn. Unscrew it and put it on eBay. Dismantle the mower and part it out. There is always some market for interchangeable mower parts.

I'd offer it for sale as is. Let the buyer restore it. If you do it yourself, you'll have more in it that what you can sell it for. Your other option is to do just enough to make the mower functional, and then sell it.
