Nine Inch Implement Tire Needed.

I am needing a 4.00 X 9" implement tire that is like the original low profile style. I have seen one in a catalog but it is almost 18" in diameter when inflated and my original is only 15". I think the original one I need to replace is made by the "blimp company". Just wondering if anyone has been tire shopping for a similar tire recently and what have they found. These tires are commonly used on hay rakes, trailing mowers, plows, etc. Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated, Hal.

Jim, I stopped by Sam's Tire this morning. I don't know if you knew Norman Snodgrass but he is the manager now even though it has been taken over by some larger company in St. Louis. Norman has worked there from probably about the time they open in late 1940's or early 50's. He is well past 70 now and in fact they had a special event to celebrate his 50 years of swervice a few years ago. Talked to Norman and he said all he shows available through their sources is the Carslisle but he knows Titan used to make them if I could locate a pair. Have a good and safe one, Hal.

Hal: I have a Miller catalogue in front of me and they do show a couple of 4.00x9 tires. They will be able to tell you outside diameter when inflated.

Hugh, I saw one in their catalog I picked up at last year's RPRU and that is where I got the tire diameter when inflated. I am looking for a low profile style like the original if they can still be found. Thanks for the response, Hal.

Miller Tire is still going and active but all they have to offer is the Carlisle brand and I'm trying to locate the original type which were a lower profile tire, Hal.

Hal, do a search for Kelsy tires here in Camdenton he will have or know where to find them but hold on to your back pocket if he has them becasue they will not be cheap. Shoot he can probably make you a set since he buys most of the old tire dies when they stop makeing that type of tire. I worked for him for awhile and he could get almost any tire you wanted but you also pay the price for them. His name is John Kelsey and he does antque tires for cars and trucks etc. You want a tire for say a 1929 packade and he will have it or he will make it for you

Rich, thanks for the information and do you have a phone no. for contact or is it available on the web yellow pages? I will certainly contact them and see what they can offer but sounds like I may have to become employed again with that route. Thanks for your response, Hal.
P.S. I'm still cleaning up ice storm damage to the trees along our driveway. Haven't gotten in the yard yet as it is still too soft for a tractor and hauling it away. Know you have the same mess to deal with.

You should be able to do a web search for his company. or try looking for antique tire dealers since thats what he does sort of. He owns most of the dies for the older tires

Replaced the trailing wheels (tires) on my 3pt hay rake with utility trailer tires. Don'tremember the exact size, and rake is in storage at another farm. Check with any reputable tire dealer for sizes available.

Ray, what kind of hay rake and model no. do you have as I restoring one at present. Just curious as to what other 2 pt. and 3 pt. hay rakes are still out there. Thanks for your response and I knew that Carlisle made one that size because it is listed in the Miller Tire catalog. I called them and that is the one which is 18" in diameter inflated. I would like to find something closer in height to the other one. I'll go by the tire dealer tomorrow and see what they can locate but not many choices in our small rural local town. One other thing I should have added and meant was they make rib implement tires in that size range I bought one about that size for my Deere #5 sickle mower it was a Carlisle rib implement I think it was an 8 incher and around 4 inches wide. So you shouldnt have any problems getting one.

James, If you have mounted your tire on the wheel already could you measure the full diameter of the tire as inflated? My original tire is only about 15" in diameter when inflated and someone told me the Carlilse would be 3" greater. Also what type of grooves or thread does this tire have as my old original one is just straight grooves like on implement tires. Thanks for your response to these questions, Hal.

Hello Hal. Both of my mowers are 135 miles away at my farm in NE Texas. I will not be going back until Friday.

After looking at an 18� ruler, your 15� diameter measurement sounds right.

If memory serves me, there are 3 ribs and 4 grooves.

Respond to R Wyler in a previous post. He stated that he bought one about that size for his Deere #5 sickle mower it was a Carlisle rib implement. His mower may be close at hand for a measurement.

James, I stopped at one of my favorite tire places this afternoon - they advertise "If it's round, rolls and is rubber we have it". Actually they had a 9" Carlisle on their rack. This guy knows his tires and just doesn't have a catalog to look at and he told me Firestone still makes what I was looking for in a 4 ply tire. He made a quick call and yes they are available so that is the route I'm headed. Thanks again for your responses, Hal.
