Hammer mill ???

I've got an old hammer mill here and the belt pulley is long gone. Could I hook this up direct to a PTO shaft on a tractor and if so would it spin to slow or to fast?? I think its an old IH hammer mill.

I have a Gehl hammermill that is pto driven. Since we've just gotten 2 feet of snow, I'm not able to make actual measurements, but checking a photo I have, the pulleys seem to be about 20 inches on the pto shaft and 5 or 6 inches on the mill. Email me for photos.

My John Deere 10A hammermill is rated to turn at 3200 RPM. I would think that directly connecting the hammermill to the PTO shaft would be too slow. I have seen some hammermills that were set up like a squealer rotary mower. They had a car or truck tire and wheel connected to a PTO shaft, with the wheel touching the belt pulley. This would get the RPM's you would need.

Arts-way Mfg. made an early grinder-mixer with that type of drive. I think they called it a "1956 Model", maybe came out that year.

That would maybe work if, it still had a belt pulley but its long since gone and fell apart years ago, it was so bad if it was still there it wouldn't be for long if I did that because it would have flown apart

Old, this is from a 1951 Wards farm catalog for their mills. Rotor 2400 RPM under load. Pto conversion kit for PTO 6 90" V belts from 22" flat faced pully on PTO shaft to 5" OD V belt pully on mill and at that time all PTO's were approximatly 540 RPM.

Most old hammer mills that I have seen with the belt drive have a pulley about the same size as the tractor pulley. Or one to one ratio.

What is the speed on a belt pulley. Is it faster than PTO speed?

A pto is generally 540 rpm. New big or tiny tractors might have 1000 rpm as well. All shaft couplers are the same diameter, so rpm is a useful number to compare.

A belt pulley can be different sizes on different tractors, so rpm is a worthless measure - big or little pulley will give you a very different speed. So they are rated at feet per minute. Sorry I forget wat the standard fpm is.

For what it's worth....the hammer mill I have is PTO driven and the PTO shaft pulley is about 16" in diameter and has 5 V belts on it...this runs to the hammer shaft and that pulley is about 5". So, this should mean the PTO shaft speed is INCREASED about 3X unless my figuring is screwy. That would seem to indicate that direct drive would be too slow if anything. Consider too, the tractor belt pulley is probably 9" or 10" and the mill pulley 5" or 6"...again making the mill turn faster than the drive pulley.
