New Holland 311 baler and tractor size

I am looking to buy a used square baler to make 2000-3000 bales per year, and haven't done much baling before. I would like to use it behind my old 1961 MF65 (42-46 pto horsepower). From my research, I have decided on a New Holland primarily because there are a lot of them in this area (probably outnumber other makes 5 to 1), and there is good local dealer support. There are 4 balers for sale in the area that I think the MF65 could handle, these being a NH273, a NH310, and two NH311's. The 311's are in the best shape. My question, is whether a 311 model is a bit too much baler for my MF65 to handle (will it throw me around a bit too much)? Our ground is level, the hay is primarily a grass mix with anywhere from 10-20% alfalfa, and I won't be towing a wagon behind the baler. Also, I have heard that the feed mechanism for the 311 is far better, and prevents banana-bales from forming when the swath is lighter. Any advice or information on any of these balers is appreciated. Thanks, Pat

I have always been under the assumption that you would need a 50 HP tractor, at a minumum, to operate the newer balers. I use a JD 4020 diesel 100 HP to operate a NH 315. It makes great bales and I also pull a flat wagon behind the baler. Believe it or not, I can solicit neighbor kids to help me put up hay in the summer. The combination of the 4020, baler & wagon, the tractor hardly knows it's there. It does bark a little when you get into the heavy windrows, like 1st cut alfalfa or straw windrows from a 30' combine head.

I have MF65 gas and currently have MF9 baler and have some hills does very good job.Tractor has multipower and some times ground speed a little to fast going down hill in high range multipower for engine hold back.I have baled with hesston 530 round baler with no problem other than hydrulics slow

Those three models are a progression of the same size unit. Pick the one that has the best value for its condition.

I've used a JD 870 (about 28 hp) to bale with a NH 315 on level ground, no wagon. It worked the tractor that's for sure but made fine bales probably around 2500 or so. We now use a MF 245 (about 42 hp) with no issues at all.

i have a 311 and love it. it makes beautiful bales. it has a much better feed system than the other balers you mentioned. they aren't bad balers, just that the 311 is better. i bale with a 560 or 826 ih, but i have some pretty steep areas and pull a wagon behind the baler. i would think your 65 would work fine with flat land and no wagon.

have baled with nh273 on a ford 4000 (~40hp) trailing a kicker wagon on hilly ground. it works it but will do the job! 273 is old but done 7000 or so each year for years now with little repairs/problems. all depends on how much you want to spend and what shape they are in.

I've used a 310 for years and have no problems with it. You have plenty of HP assuming you don't put to many trailers behind it and you keep speeds according to your manual....Good luck which ever way you go..... .

i run a 311 with a 2120 ford (54hp) with 140 bale wagons and it has no problem at all. we have run it with a wd45 with no wagon in a pinch..

I don't think a MF 65 in good shape will have any trouble pulling any of those balers. I've been told that the NH 310 is made too light, but I've never had any experience with it. The 273 is an old baler, I would not get it unless it is in very good condition and cheap.

We have a New Holland 326 commercial baler.(Bigger twine box and knotter side tire) At my farm we pull it with a 4020 Diesel 91 HP, but thats because we are on PA hills with metal rack wagons. This summer I ran it with my uncles JD 2440 which is rated at 52 hp drawbar. My uncle had 40 acres of straw to bale and the 2440 ran it in up to 4th gear and we cranked out 1800 bales in a day and a half. New Holland is by far the better balers, I had the pleasure of running a IH 430 baler during my summer high school job, constant headache and frustrations.
