Vermeer 504G - good baler? value?

Looking to buy a small (4') used round baler this spring. Looking at NH 630's, JD 446's, and just starting to look at the Vermeer 504 series of which I think I can get a reasonable deal on the 504G (about $5500) for one in very good shape with new belts and several new bearings. Questions I have are is this a good reliable baler? I notice the pickup has no gauge wheels so if I drop one wheel into a groundhog hole, is it going to tear up the pickup? Anything specific to look out for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn.

Usually a nice sharp 504 Super G will sell for $4,000-$5,000 but not any more. A Standard 504 G would top out at $4,500. THese balers are good balers but $5,500 is $1,000 too much for a 504G.

The 504G is a good reliable baler the wil make good tight bales.
The gauge wheel was optional and I would recommend one. It is not too much of a problem without one if the balance springs are adjusted properly.
I would check the roller bearings in the pickup cam as well as the bushings. Lots of people are too lazy to greasw them.
The rest is just normal wear such as chains and sprockets. The triple sprocket is pretty expensive.
