JD 336 bale tension

I have a JD 336 baler. I used to make some pretty light bales, but lately I've wanted to make them heavier.

I have the tension on the chamber all the way to the top of the bolts and the strings still have some slack in them. The hay I bale is pretty grassy stuff, and I've heard it's harder to pack a tight bale in grass.

My neighbors NH 565 can make a bale that you can barely get your fingers under the string.

Am I unrealistic in thinking that my 336 should be able to make a tighter bale? What should I be looking for? Is it possible to tell if the tension springs are worn out?

To make tighter bales, turn those tension adjusting
nuts clockwise to make that area of the bale chamber smaller and run the baler at 540RPMs, and go fast enough to keep the pickup full of hay,but not so
fast the packer gets to bangin.

Does your baler have any wedges for extra resistence on inside of bale chamber? If not ypu need to bolt some in. Tx Jim

First off, is the bar across the top and bottom of the bale chamber that is connected to the tensioners rubbing on the bale chamber when you have then tension all the way on? If not, something is wrong with your tension system. If they are touching, then your windrow might be too light, or your hay could be too dry. Also your restrictor plates on the inside of the chambermight be worn, or you don't have any.

Definitely something wrong somewhere... I run mine set to where you almost cant get your hands under the twine and usually thats 2/3 of the way screwed in. I'd check to make sure something isnt physically broken, twine tension is tight, PTO speed, and windrow size. Only time I cant get a good bale is if I try to bale without raking, just following the mower.

You need to adjust your speed to the size of windrow you have. If the windrow is big, slow down. If it is small, speed up. Doing this will keep the balers intake steady and thus give you heavier bales.

First check the linkage on the tension assy.
then the tension on the twine you might have the twine to loose. Tighten the twine the look at the knot it should be even on both loops. Brad

Really light grasses you need all the restrictor plates that can be bolted in and there is a plunger head extension that can help too.
