Well, first off I ain't done any hay/straw cutting, raking. ...so I know nothing about it. I do have about 2 acres in winter wheat and a 12 wide buffer around another 8 acres in brome...I'd like to cut it this spring and summer and find a simple way to "rake" and pile it up using my Allis C, and use the stuff as bedding for my vegtables. Don't need it baled....so does anyone have any ideas on a home made rake?...or is there something out there i could use for a small operation that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg?

What about a hay loader. You would need some help on the wagon, but it would work for two acres, if you can find a usable loader. This one is pulled by horses, but a tractor would work, too.

Ron, where are you located? I have an old rake on steel that I am going to scrap because I can't raise the rake. It worked good for the acre I have behind the house but I'm going to be raking for some neighbors and I can't take this one down the road. I got a new one so the old one on steel has to go. It still rakes but it does not disengage or raise up, the adjustments are all seized. I'm in central OH. Some beer money and it's yours.

Where in central Ohio are you, close to what town? I am in western Ohio at Wapakoneta and I work with steel wheel hay rakes fixing up for the Amish. For central Ohio I am quessing you might be less than a hundred mile from me. Do you have any idea what the make is? Lester (Leroy) Helmlinger

I forgot, the rake is an IH. Do a search in the implement photos, search for "vintage IH rake", there's a photo of it.

why not bale it up? it would be easier to haul and if you don't need it all you can store it ease until you do. it would have to be dry to bale though. you might not want that. but even after you rake it up with what ever you'd need a pitch fork to load it on a wagon or dump bed truck. i wouldn't want to do it that way either.

Well, what kind of equipment would I need to rake and bale my own? Rake and Baler, but something used that my Allis C can operate. any models in mind?...again I don't know much about it.

i wouldn't go to the expense of getting my own equiptment. sounds like you would have more hay than you need, so see if you can find somebody to bale it for you on shares. just have a figure in mind of how many bales you need and then if you don't get enough for your share have an understanding with the contractor about how much he wants for some of the hay. all you would need is a nice trailer big enough to haul what you want and use your tractor to pull the trailer with. that will work the old girl a little and you'll get to play with her some. you might get a good deal from him if you offer to haul all the hay or at least your share. don't try to hold him up. he has to furnish all the equiptment, pay insurance buy fuel etc, i use to bale hay for the public and i had to roll something like 54 tires before i ever put a bale of hay in the barn.

If you can find an old rake on steel wheels you can get it sometimes for little more than scrap. As for a baler, if you can find a JD 14 or 24t with a wisconsin motor on it, all your C has to do is pull it. Any decent baler with a motor should work for you though since you are'nt doing a whole lot.

Couple way you could do it. 1 is find an old dump rake but to use it you would need 2 people, one on the tractor and one on the rake. The other way its a side delievry rake which can be found all over the place and some sell pretty cheap at auctions. I use my Allis C to rake hay in the summer and almost any rake can be pulled by a C since they don't take a lot of HP to pull. If you tried to make one it would probably end up costing you more to do that then it would to buy one
