Hello there,

Im in the process of restoring my Grandfather's IHC two bottom plow. At first I just assumed it was a Little Genius plow since that was what I was most familiar with. Now I'm not so sure and I need some help making up my mind.

How can one tell the difference definitively with these plows? Somewhere I read that if the plow has a fixed rear wheel then it is a Little Wonder. My plow does have a fixed rear wheel but it has clearly been broken and then rewelded onto the plow so Im hesitant to base the ID completely on that. Also the way the hitch mounts to the main beams is similar to what Ive seen in pictures of Little Geniuss, that is there are two large steel plates on the outside of the main beams and the beams themselves don't look like they bend groundwards as much as the Little Wonder pictures I have seen.

As you can probably tell Im not going on much here, mostly just pictures I have seen on this website. Do these plows have serial numbers like tractors and if so where would they be located? I am living in West Virginia now and these plows are pretty rare in this part of the country and ever rarer are any plowing experts. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I posted a picture under the Help Identify part of the Gallery area if it is any help. Once again thanks a lot.

The Little Wonder Plow did not have a back wheel according to the picture in 150 Years of International Harvester Book. The back wheel must just have been add on.

Travis: Your plow is a Little Wonder, very likely a no. 4. There were 4 different Little Wonder plows built. 1 and 2 go way back into 1920s and were two bottom plows, no. 3 was single bottom, and no. 4 was two bottom. There was very little difference between 1, 2 and 4, as each was a replacment for the previous model. Over the years there were upgrades and one would almost need a parts book to pick that out.

Don't be fooled by some parts looking like a Little Genius, some parts actually are the same. The frame is different, hitch is different and the Little Genius had the lifting tail wheel. It had a linkage from the tail wheel to the rockshaft of left front wheel, that activated the rear wheel to lift.

The front wheels and lift hub are the same. Coulters and plow bottoms were the same for both, however there were several options, thus any two given plows could look much different.

I can"t put my finger on it,but it doesn"t look quite right to be a little genius.I had a set of 2 bottom 14" I rebuilt and used for a couple of years.Looking at the picture ,I just can"t place what"s different.Have to dig out the books.Sorry this doesn"t help much.
