Section Bolts for Ford 515 Sickle

has anyone replaced entire knife rivets with bolts for sections on sickle mower? I got a Ford 515 7-ft sickle and am tuning it for the spring hay. A lot of folks swear by the bolts, and since I plan on getting all new sections for knife was wondering if it makes sense to go with bolts. I hay only 35 acres of orchargrass about 4 times a year. Do the section bolt nuts get loose and make problems?

You don't need to drill out rivets-it takes much less time and effort to shear off thee heads with a cold chisel and punch out the remainder. When you reassemble everything, bar clamps should be loose enough to fit a post card between bar and clamp.

MF135,

I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower with a 6 ft. bar. I have replaced some of my knife section rivets with bolts and they work fine. I peen the ends of the bolts after I install the nuts, and I also had to replace the hold down brackets with high clearance brackets so the bolts would clear the brackets.

thanks for comment. Did you remove the knife or just take off a few guards and replace some sections? I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to take off guards and replace the bad sections one-at-a time with bolts and keep old knife in place, or replace entire knife assembly. Its a lot cheaper to just replace sections and clips than buying a whole new knife with sections, but is it worth the hassle?

MF135,

I've always removed the connection to the pitman arm, slid the knife assembly out of the end of the bar, and worked on selective knife sections.

When I first got the mower about 5 or 6 years ago, it didn't cut well. I replaced all of the ledger plates and that made a world of difference. I've only replaced selected knife sections as they are needed.

I am not sure but I think that is a IH mower and they work well with rivets. Like you I have heard lots of people talking about the bolts making it easier to put in new sections, but also claim that vibration causes them to loosen. If you go to bolts I would recommend that you brad the bolts so they dont vibrate loose.

Will the bolt heads or nuts clear the guards?
I use bolts on a 31 inch Toro rotary mower's blade. I use self locking nuts and never had a problem except for drilling the rivets out. Hal
