When is a plastic corn planter plate worn out? Aside from the obvious like broken webs or cells what should you look for. I buy old plates at sales for my IH 56 planter. Since they are mostly used and show some wear, what areas determine if it still is useable or just for barn decorations. They all show some wear on the top flat surface, but the cells always look ok. It is nice to have a large selection on hand so i can can size the plate to the seeds since the seed companies do not do that much anymore. I have bought new ones but at $12.00 each vs. $1.00 or $2.00 at a sale why not.

I have seen the holes you are talking about on some plates and not on others. Usually seems to be two of them always on the bottom side. I had wondered about them. Now i know. I might be interrested in some of your plates. I usually just buy whatever i come across at a sale. I think there about 54 different ones for IH planters. Do you have any idea what you would ask for some and how little or how large a quantity are you thinking of.

Most seed companies are bagging mostly for plateless seed nowadays. Plate type seed demand is small. Pioneer is only bagging 4 sizes for plates now, I think; Med Flat (F14 it's also called), Small Flat (F16), Medium Round (R23) and Small Round (R26).

For F14 you need C7-16X or C7-24X. For F16 you need C9-16 or C9-24. For R23 you need C1X-16 or C1X-24. For R26 you need C25-26 or C25-24.

"16" means 16 cell plate. "24" means 24 cell plate. Where I listed an "X" and if your plate does not show an X, do not use your plate as it will overplant or grind up some kernels.

Other brands of seed might need different plates, you have to look at their bags.

I have many other plate sizes, all new. Give me your email address and we can go thru details.

Most of the plastic plates were made by Lincoln Ag Products. If you look along the outer rim you should see a small hole, maybe about 1/8" in diameter. That hole does not go completely thru the plate and is there for a "wear gauge".

As the plate wears, pretty soon you would be able to see competely thru that hole. When that happens, you throw the plate away or hang it on a wall.

That wear gauge hole is in both JD and IH plates.
If plastic plates do not have that wear gauge, then they were made before the idea of the wear gauge.

Let me know if you find what I'm talking about.

I also have a ton of new plates after being in the seed business for 30 yrs. Lincoln Ag now charges $12 ea plus shipping. I can do better than that!
