70 gas and NH 477 haybine

Can someone consider a problem I had last summer. I bought a NH 477 haybine. Runs really good. Does not look modified at all, especially in the reach. I used it with my John Deere 70 gas trator. In order to get the PTO linkage to hook up properly, I had to put the draw (original) to max long to give some pto reach room. That is just to get it to hook up, and when I do that I still have to push the pto almost all of the available travel back. In any corner it binds, I know its going to break or twist the linkage. The PTO is turned off in corners.

I was looking for ideas, causes, solutions. I am going to at a minimum build a further drawbar extension using the two holes in the end of the drawbar to get more PTO travel play. But that seems odd to have to do that.

Stu

My 70 has been hooked to both my newholland haybines, one is a 495 12' cut and the other is a 479 9' cut and both work fine on center hole of the drawbar. However when trucked the pto is tight on the one I think. You do have the drawbar down dont you?

There is a standard length from outer end of pto to drawbar hole, that should show in your manual. On my JD G(unstyled) I have to put an extension on the end of the drawbar to get that long especially because of the adapter from 1 3/4 to 1 3/8 pto. I would have thought the 70 would have been late enough to meet that standard. I am not familiar with that haybine but would suspect it has been altered or just needs some adjustment.

My IHC 1190 has to have a short extension on drawbar to work correct. It is even pictured in the sales paper for this machine.

Not real sure about your 477, but just a thought.

Has someone bolted the PTO pivot stand solid on the mower? Should pivot forward and rearward on the tongue via one thru bolt.

What is the distance from the drawbar hole to the end of the pto shaft on the tractor? Did you try adjusting the drawbar longer? Of it could be the drawbar was cut off or changed out from another tractor?

its an original drawbar, same as on my other 70. Same length, no signs of cutting.

I have that tractor in the shop, I will get that distance today and repost.

Is the PTO shaft directly over the drawbar?
