Dollie wheels on NH bar rake

Can someone with a dollie wheel rake tell me if the factory NH dollie setup has any type of bearings in it(like a turntable) or is it simply two plates riding on each other.

As one of the other guy's said they used a machined cast iron block bolted between the frame rails that the wheel shaft pivot's on. Our IH 35 was setup pretty much the same way and every 35 I've seen was cracked as well as several NH's I've seen. On our 35 I replaced the cast iron piece with some 1/2" steel plate welded to the bottom of the frame (I had to cut the frame to get it the right height) and then I bolted a four bolt pillow block bearing to the top and bottom of that plate so the dolly wheels pivot in those bearings. This is a much more solid setup than the factory used and it should last forever.

Does the pillow block then support the weight of the rake? I don't know much about pillow blocks, but they look to me like they are designed to hold the weight of a horizontal shaft. James

I don't think anyone is understanding what I meant from the beginning of this conversation. I see now how the pivot is built, and I like the way you have done it and thanks for the good picture and description. However, a vertical shaft/pivot does not support the weight of the front of the rake. Does the center of your pillow block(the cylinder which would support the shaft if set in a horizontal manner) set down on the wheels? If so, I would think the weight of the rake would push the bearings apart? Or at least push the center up until it hit your half inch plate. Then the weight of the rake is carried by the plate through the center of the pillow block. In essence all the weight of the front of the rake is riding on the lower pillow block center? Am I making any sense? James

That rake has been over about 500 acres since I did that conversion with no problems. I wouldn't want to support alot of weight on the bearings like that but those rakes don't weight all that much.

We have a Dollie wheel NH Rake. I will try to explain how the wheels work. Their is a cast iron block bolted to the frame where the hitch would normaly be, this block has a large vertical hole that has a shaft through to the top of the axles. The hitch is attached to the axle at the joint of the vertical shaft and the akle. I hope I was able to explain this to your understanding.
