I'll be looking for a used hay rake this year, and want to know if the NH 56 is the same as 256. Is the NH 56 any good, is it ground driven and what would a good price be? Can I use these rakes in the field by pulling with a pickup truck instead of the tractor? Sorry for breaking the one-question rule.

Used to rake with the '46 Chevy, no wrapping with a closed driveline! If I were planning to rake with a pickup I would look for a wheel rake: Darf, Morrel, Farmhand, New Idea all had them. You can set the tonque so you don't drive over the windrow and you can go faster with out damaging the rake.

The 56 is ground driven (like the 256) and is the earlier version of the 256. Many of the parts are interchangeable, but the rakes are not identical.

However, we have both models and they perform pretty much the same. They are good rakes and are a pleasure to run because they are almost silent when raking.

Things to check: The telescopic driveshaft wears and is about $150 to replace today. Also check the rolabar bearings, plus check the bearings on the input and output shaft of the gearbox, U-joints etc.

There has been much discussion on this site regarding the virtues of dolly wheels and to be honest, we have one of each and either one has its' pluses and minuses. Personally, I wouldn't let it influence my decision either way.

I would think twice about raking with a pickup. As Broken stated, there are disadvantages. Our Farmall H with the 7 mph 4th gear is a nice match for these rakes and the tedders as well. Good luck,

Scott

Using a pickup has problems - "Oh just a little faster...." Tend to have a broken rake. As well as the fire issue. I'm sure you will go ahead & use the pickup. Just saying it will cause problems down the road..... ;)

There are build differences, possibly different gear case, etc. But, basiclly the same rake as far as operation & value. I see 56 go for $500 around here, 256 go $1000. Average.

I believe some of the earlier 56`s didn`t have the staggered wheels. Other than that the performance should be the same. I`d pretty careful using a pickup, espacially in heavier hay. Pretty easy to wrap hay around the drive shaft or start a fire on the exhaust.

The ones without the staggered rear wheels are 55's - one model older yet.

I know a fella that did that, and wrapped the drive shaft. It didn't take him long to wish he'd just unhitched the tractor and put that on the rake.....
Otherwise, like has been said, they're much the same old rake, and do the job. I'm not a rollabar fan, but it'll do in a pinch. I've got a 56...

The 56 is older then the 256 but they are almost the same. The 56 or 256 are very good. I sold my 56 last year for $700 A 256 will sell for $1000 or maybe more.
