I am going to build a hay barn for square bales and haul them with my 1000 NH wagon. I would like to hear some discussion on width and height size. Such as 20' bays and trusses or 30' center and 20' outside or 3 20' bays. Cost is a factor. I am considering 20' poles 4' in ground with about a 15' height. Wind is a concern out here on the prairie. I have a brother-n-law that has farm in MO He built his Hay barn 16' feet high and is just right . it is 40'w X 16'H X 80'L with a 12' shed on each side for storage of Eqpt . Made nice building the only thing I would have done different I would have put Trusses on 4' centers not 8'.

i stack with a 1012 (2 bales wide) i think it's same as a 1000. 30' wide clear span is just right. I can make 4 stacks across and have about a foot on either side. eaves are 16', that's plenty high. it doesnt add much to the cost of the building to go a little extra on height. bays are 15'(this is all steel with 6" purlins). make it as long as you want. my building is 30x60 and holds 2420 bales. if i stack on top by hand i can squeeze in another 1000-1200 bales.

I went 13'6", thats a foot extra over the spec but with old hay, bumps, humps, etc I wanted the extra.

Depth of post and pitch of roof would be a local consideration. I build 72'x28' deep. Used 18 cedar poles set 3' deep. Bottom of the plate on the low side is 13'6", bottom of the plate on the high side is 17'. Used 2x8's on top of the post and on the fronts to make caps and plates. Then set 2x6 rafters on top of them, 3 feet apart. Sheeting boards on 3' centers on top of that. Roof and siding with tin.
