baler guru needed

I'm looking at used balers and dont know that much about them
So far i've found a JD 14t that they say worked when they parked it for 125. A massey 124 that needs a Knotter for a hundred and a Ford 532 For 200. that needs a knotter.I wont be making alot of bales but I'm looking for clean tight bales for building bale houses.I've got a Case 830 so hp isn't a problem.Any help is appreicated

right now I wont be doing that many bales mybe a couple hundred a year a first.I figure for a buck and a quarter I cant go wrong.$3000 might be a good price for a decent baler but that almost more then I paid for the tractor.I have to stay cheap,lets say inexpensive on the baler. I'm fairly handy with the right tools so repairs are no big deal

Of the choices you have, probably the JD is the best bet. Parts for them are still available, although sometimes expensive. It all depends on what you end up needing. For the price of the machine, you can afford to put money into if you have to. I don't have any personal experience with an MF, but have heard generally good things about them. I know that in these parts (NH) they will sell for used close to what a comperable JD will bring. I would guess that parts would still be around for them. I've known people who had Ford Balers, and have heard mixed stories about them. I do know that parts for them are hard to find, and costly when you do. I myself have an IH 430 that I've had good luck with so far. It does miss a bale from time to time (as many balers do) but makes avery nice, clean, tight bale.

I'm gonna ask how much baling you plan on doing??? Because, you might be better off just continueing to look. Not that any of those balers are better than one or the other, but the fact that the JD has sat for 10 years worries me. The knives are probiably shot, and the camber knives probiably need alot of work. As for the Massey, when was it last run? Also, you have to take into consideration how easy it is to get parts for the darned things.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If you use this machine somewhat seriously (example putting up 1500 bales or more a year) then the ability to easily and quickly get parts is all in itself something to consider. Where I grew up as kid all anybody had was New Holland balers, and mowers because 2 large dealers were within 30 miles of my house. Down here in Maryland where I live now, you have a mix of JD and New Holland stuff.

It's not a question of if you break, but when are you going to break and how bad. Thats the way of it with farming in general. That's why most farmers don't get rid of their old broken stuff. It might have a chain sprocket on it that can get them out of a world of trouble if they got 10 acres of hay down on a sunday evening with rain due monday morning with a broken pickup sprocket on the baler, that just happens that sprocket on that old chopper is the same sprocket on that baler.

Hey Mike, I'm located in Tyler, Tx. and there is a J.D. 224 wire square baler in the american classified this week. They are wanting $3000 for it, but it has had all new parts. It is a very good started baler and only needs about a 35-40hp tractor to run. I use to have one and I really enjoyed it, but it is an older baler and slower than today's baler. But as you said you are wanting a starter baler. You should be able to look it up on the internet.

I was leaning towards the JD sounds like the best one.I'm in arkansas.After a couple of years I'll upgrade but it seems like the JD will work just fine

Where are you located? In my area you can't find a baler cheaper than $600 and that's for a worn out one.

The Ford is best left where it's at. It was a good baler in it's day, but you can't get most of the parts for it anymore, and what you can get are expensive. On your list, I'd go with the Deere, or keep looking.

if that 14T worked when parked and was kept covered buy it. They still bring good money here and are still the most dependable baler ever buile as long as ya dont want a kicker.

the massy 124 is a good baler but like they said if it has knotter problems then it may be truble, id say keep looking and try to find something a lil newer, mabe a good new holland...

Any baler with knotter problem is a big problem and can cost a lot to fix, plus you need to know how to fix them also. A JD 14T in its day was a real good baler and the books and parts are still handled by JD. No matter what one you look at or get make sure they knotter is in working order or you will be pulling your hair out by this time next year. BTDT and get to start again on that type of problem when it gets warmer out

I'd go for the 14T, I bought one a few years ago , and it needed some parts and they were all avalible still....I dont know about the massey , herd they were good , but I imagine a knotter asm. will set you back at least a 100 bucks , I would stay away from the ford....have not heard good things from people who did have them...just lube up the 14T , clean off the knotters and polish them up if possible, air up the tires and go for it...shawn
