OT Sunflowers

Is there anyone out there that is raising the sunflowers like we had in this area back 10-15 year ago by the whole fields, they if I remember correctly were about 3 ft. tall with heads about 5" across. I would like to find a couple dozen seed to raise a few to add some color to the vegetable garden. If anybody could help I would be able to pay a reasonable price for a few. Leroy

Funny thing about sunflowers, when I grew up in KS farming with my Dad they were considered a weed. No I am in TX and they grow them as a crop. I am sure my Dad is in Heaven looking down and wondering what has went wrong down here. LOL

Any way they are a common crop around here so I am sure getting seed is not a problem. I grew some in the garden last year, got my seed from Lowe's.

I think you are talking about the 'black oil' sunflowers that they sell as bird feed. Those will get up to 7-8 feet high if conditions are right. I have grown them myself and they are beautiful when in bloom.

I have also grown the 'confectionary' kind, you can buy these in packets anywhere that sells garden seeds and they get REALLY tall, mine were as high as 10-12 feet. And the seed head was huge, over a foot across.

I use a corn planter to plant mine in rows but in a pinch I think you could broadcast the seeds too as long as you have a way to work them into the soil a little.

I have to laugh when read about the sunflower plants. When we were kids back on the farm, my brother tried to climb one of them and it broke off after he got up aways. He did get a good scrape on his face on the way down.

Any seed catalog will have a couple dozen varieties. Burpee is a good one.

I have a bunch of seed catalogs and none have the plain golden yellow in a handeable height. Either very light yellow, orange, red, 8-12' tall or 1 1/2' tall but nothing like used to be raised in the fields. I do not know where their market was at that time but no one is raising them anymore around here. Leroy

buy some bird seed early and plant a few in a pot inside the house and see if they germinate good or not. count how many seeds you plant.

Just buy some sunflower bird seed. Thats what I do and they seem to do all right.
