HP Ratings on Bush Hogs - Any leeway?

Hello,
We're having a local dealer drop off our new (to us) Ford 5000 this weekend and I need to know if I'm needing to start shopping for a Bush Hog. We have a 5x5 FMC Sidewinder (not the one with the tire) we bought for our Ford 2000 and now I'm wondering if it'll survive being hooked to the 5000. The gearbox is harder to turn by hand than any other that I've owned, so I've wondered if it was a 60hp 'box instead of the normal 40hp. Assuming it is just a tight 40hp gearbox, will the 5000 shred it? I guess my question is, how important is the rating on these gearboxes? Yes, I'll probably move up in size at some point but my budget would like a breather before having to buy more equipment! ;-)

Well, there are a lot of variables... if as you are saying you are going to reclaim brushed over fields, I would recommend a model 406 Bush Hog. This is supposed to be able to cut stems up to 4 inches and cuts a 6 foot swath. Yeah, one 4 incher is ok, but remember, if you run a half dozen of them under the deck at the same time.... it's gonna take a lot of HP. to grind up all that wood! It has a good slip clutch, but it will seize if left out in the rain after using it. Gotta check it each time out. I brush mow for a side job and user only a 5 foot on a 55 horse tractor. In light mowing it seems small, but when I'm in alders...a 5 foot pass in alders is a lot of wood going under the deck all at once! I bought the heaviest mower I could get and am not sorry. I have a good slip clutch and check it frequently, but still break stuff. My advice... don't do heavy mowing in frozen brush, it's too hard on the mower.Its better to have horse power to spare than overtaxing the tractor. Cal

Last year I broke a universal joint knuckle on a 6 ft squeeler with my MF 175, never had that happen with the 35 hp tractors. So Im guessing it makes a difference.

Thanks for the advice guys. We'll have to start looking for a larger Bush Hog right away as I'm needing to clear cut another area for pasture as soon as the snow's gone. It will include a lot of small scrub trees, brambles, etc so I won't even try it with the 5'. I think the 10' mower is WAY too wide for our main property (8.5AC of partially wooded ridgeline). My gates are only 12'!!!! As a rule of thumb, what should I be looking at??? 6, 7 or 8 foot? At which size do they usually get beefy enough for the 5000?

Just bought (and researched) one the other day. First - Brown's tree cutter - ahead of the rest I understand - not an option pricewise or need. Now, Woods is the best brand, and I mow anything with it. We used a 5 to 10 year old model for 19 more years - the deck just requires too much rework, the gearbox is good. This is a standard duty machine. Woods also offers medium and heavy duty units. I bought a medium duty 6' for my 60 hp tractor (JD 5400), and think this will be great. I see very little need for a true heavy duty - maybe powerlines or something like that.

In short, buy Woods.

Six footers with a 100 hp gear box are available from many companies (Bushhog, Brown's, Rhino,Woods, and others). I like one that's a bit wider than the tractor's rear tire measurement outside to outside. With a 5000 anything from 6 to 10 ft in a 3 pt mount. I've got an old 6' Servis ex-hiway dept. cutter-works great, bought it at a auction for $200.00.
If it quit on me tomorrow I'd look for another cheap used one.

put a slip clutch in the driveline to protect the gearbox from the excess horespower in case you do hit something solid...shouldnt give you any probs if youre just shredding grass.

I agree with the others.. the 67 pto hp of that 5000 wouldn't be great for a 40 or 60 hp box.. if really working it. If you are just clipping 'clean' pasture.. i think the 5' mower will be self limiting as to how much you can cut in one pass.. etc.

That is.. if no brush.. go for it.

Get a bigger mower when you can afford it. Your 5000 will pull a 10' mower if the hyds are average and engine runs ok. ( that's what i run on mine.. a 10' 3pt unit.. i had to put 340# up front... A lift or drag mower of same size would be better.. etc.. )

It will make a difference what type of cutting you are doing. I you are just cutting grass your OK but heavy brush small trees etc will probably kill it.

Well as long as it has the correct shear pin/bolt in it you should be ok but if its doesn't its a maybe maybe not thing. You really need to find out what gear box it has to be sure.
