Although you can't see the running gear, it is an Electric gear under this chopper box. Dad bought it in the mid 40's. I don't recall any decals. Just the serial number tag on the rear axle. As far a pulling, it was lousy. Eventually replaced it with a JD 963 running gear. 100% better.

Why was the word "Electric" used in the company name?

The name "Electric" came from a Patent awarded to the company in its early days. EWC(Electric Wheel Co, Quincy, ILL) made farm wheels, running gears, hubs & spindles, and even ventured into the traction engine business. At the time all the wheels were iron rims with either wood or iron spokes. The patent was for a method of heating the ends of the iron spokes electrically, thus the name "Electric". The company was bought by Firstone in the 50's or 60's(??) and then sold to Titan in the early 80's. During the 60's and 70's EWC made running gears for most of the Ag OE's, with the major exception of John Deere. In the late 70's the production of running gears was moved to Abilene, KS and then sold to a private company.

It's been over 20 years ago. There is a metal serial number tag on the right rear axle and there may be an "Electric" decal and a model number decal on the front part of the gear. As I recall the decals would have white letters on a black background with a white boarder. The model number would be block letters and "Electric" would be in more of a script type letter.

My dad bought a brand new electric wheel running gear in 1948 or 49, and it has always been shedded. It was a very good running gear, always pulled straight. I do not recall seeing any decals on it, but it has an ID plate on the rear portion and indicates it was made in Quincy, Illinois. At least that's how I remember the ID plate, haven't looked at it for a long time.
