IH 470 Disk Bearings

I have a 470 that have the grease zerks wore off on the gang bearings. They don't turn out and with a vise-grip I can't pull them out. What is the trick to those things??? How do I get them out? My uncle says that the bearings really are greaseless, and the zerk and the grease are just to keep the bearing "floating". Any body ever have this problem? They are talking -20 degrees this weekend, I want to get the disk out and the skid steer in the shed!!

try grinding it off flush and the using an ease-out on it. either way it should turn even if its a drive in type. a little heat around the outside edges to help break it loose might help and then put wd-40 on it when its hot. wd-40 might catch on fire with you so watch it. sears makes a small set of tools for removing screws where the head is rounded off. theres 3 to a set and i have used them with a drill to back stubborn things out.

There is a tool to take these pressed in fittings out, but I have never used one. Usually try to attach a vice grips and hit it with a hammer. Most of the time it works, but sometimes it breaks off and then resort to drilling it out with a carbide bit. Never reinstalled a pressed in zerk, always threaded and put in a standard fitting.

I have a 370 and the original bearings have drive in zerks. The new ones I got at bearings specialties have screw in zerks. I have drilled out the drive in ones and tapped them before, usually don't last long though. Either they already got dirt in them or metal from drilling.
