I planted thousands of acres with a 495 John Deere 4 rows at a time. Took a bit of fooling before things went right, but that was me, not the planter. This was a plate planter so graded seed and slow speeds were necessary. The boss had things planned so he wanted different populations and varieties in every field. I found that the manual with population counts and corresponding plant spacings was absolutely necessary. I'd have been lost without it. As for the planter itself, get one in good shape, trying to save a rusty monument can be a real pain. I've got a bunch of Ford 309's out back to prove it. Good Luck. Oh, and if you're in a colder climate like me, make sure you can set a real shallow depth, hold it and still cover the seed. There are usually no worries about planting to moisture depth like our southern friends. Tom
