Just wandering why do some old trailing plows have a big wheel and one small wheel and some I see have the same size on both sides?

thanks for the help

A bigger wheel on the left (land) side will provide more traction for a wheel (ground) lift model- gives more leverage to raise the plow. Smaller wheel will slip easier before lifting the plow. On a hydraulic lift plow- doesn't matter.

The big tire belongs on the land side, and the smaller tire belongs on the furrow side. This is to allow for more adjustment in order to get the plow to run level and plow at the same depth with all bottoms. I think ALL (not sure about that) trailing type plows are supposed to have this configuration, but some of them were modified and now have the same size tire on both the land side and the furrow side. These plows will still do a very good job after the initial pass, but may not plow level on the first pass.

Rusty, I think maybe you might be in error a little bit...the IHC #8 plows that I have seen (and the one I own) have both wheels of same size. I can see that a larger wheel for the lifting wheel might help keep it from sliding some, but whatever wheels you have you can adjust the plow for leveling and depth just fine with the two levers; the levers have a lot of adjustment capability. If necessary, a tire chain on the lifting wheel takes care of any sliding.

Just depends on the model. John Deere, the 52 plow was the light weight plow and both wheels were the same, the 4B was the heavy weight plow and the right wheel was same size as the 52 plow but the left wheel was 4" bigger to give more traction for the heavier plow.
