MH plow ???

Just got back from the frozen tundra with my new antique Masey Harris model 28 , 2-16" pull plow on rubber.Anyone know when Massey Harris started putting rubber tires on their plows.Only thing I know is 1948 and they were steel wheels then. The plow is complete and in good shape for its age.It even has some of those hammer on share edges that I haven't seen since the 50s

Hi, My old parts book on the 28 only shows pictures of steel, but it lists rubber tires as
avail from 1939-1950 and gives all the part no's. Then in 1951 all the part
numbers are diff for 1951 and up along with other
changes-hyd lift etc. Most of the ones we sold
were on steel til into the 50's. Chuck

Chuck: You eluded to something quite interesting. when you said, " Most of the ones we sold, were on steel til into the 50s." I'll bet every dealer of every make of plow could say the same. My dad bought a plow on steel long after rubber became available. I once had a Cockshutt dealer tell me, he brought in a 3 bottom rubber tired plow in 1953. He had to keep it for his own plow. I've heard countless other stories like this from one end of this land to the other. Farmers just plain resisted rubber tired plows.

msb: I expect MH were like most other companies, rubber was introduced in the late 30s, then got put on hold during WW#2. Then you have that period from 45 to late 50s where both steel and rubber were available, on any given plow.

When I was a young lad in Nova Scotia, the plows I was most often exposed to were IH, MH and Cockshutt. I am 64 now, and I can remember seeing new plows of these three makes, some on steel and some on rubber. I would call rubber tired plows an eveolution rather than a definite date. It all happened between 1940 and 1960.

Thanks.I have a Massey Harris Buyers Guide from either 1947 or 1948,I can't remember.The book doesn't mention rubber tires as being an option .I would have been 8 or 9 during those years and I don't remember seeing a rubber tired plow at the fair either.As I recall,Dad's new 44-6 was used at the fair display just before he took delivery on it.
