fitting bearings on a disk axle

Got new bearings, 1-1/8 dia for a 1-1-8 axle on a disk. Problem is, the bearings go on part way and then theyre a little too tight and wont slide down the axle. Considering using a abrasive disk grinder to grind some of the rust and uneven wear marks on the axle. Any thoughts guys?

I got it corrected. Bearings fit and the round axle is polished up. Ran a disk grinder on it while a buddy turned it so as to not create flat spots. Figure, as it is a salvaged shaft there are a few spots where loose blades wore ridges in it, plus the rust. Looks real good and works great now. Thanks guys.

Square shaft or round shaft? If it's a square shaft, a wire wheel will clean the rust off. IF they still won't go, a grinding wheel will take the ridges off where the blades worked up a ridge on the shaft... or a file if you prefer.
Dunno much about the type with round shaft. Guess I'd clean it up with a wire wheel first and see where or why it's hanging, and either grind or file it, depending on how serious the problem. All I know is that you want everything moving freely if you ever want that thing tight. Good luck.

Sometimes an axle shaft is run loose & gets a ridge in it from the disk blade wearing on shaft. Might need them knocked that off with a flat file otherwise I would use a coarse emery cloth.

use a disk grinder with a wire cone brush and shine up the shaft

even a new flat file can do wonders to get the rust off of a shaft,but be carefull not to wear flat spots in the shaft while you are filing.phill.

Ok, thanks for the info. I measured the shaft with calipers so I am sure its the right size. By the looks of it, it cant be much that is different, holding the bearing from going on. Maybe a light oil on the shaft would help the bearing slide also.

Get some emery paper(medium) tear off a strip and take
most of the course rust off. Then use fine or extra fine to polish the shaft. DO NOT use a disc
grinder unless you plan on purchasing a new shaft. This may not work as we do not know specifics, how much rust? or are you sure you have the correct bearing? Hope this helps. LE
