I'm thinking about buying a new 10 ft model. How many acres are they good for, cutting just plain grass hay---if you don't tear them up carelessly?? I'd like to think it would do me until retirement--which would be about 2500 acres of cutting.

I think that without anything unusual happening a disk mower will cut more than 2500 acres. In decent yrs here which the last two haven't been for lack of rainfall avg coastal bermuda will be in the 2/3 rolls per acre. My NH 617 has cut 4 seasons and about 12000 rolls so if you divide by 2+ rolls/acre that's more than 2500 acres and I'm planning on cutting with it again this yr. I've heard of some brands that the bottom of cutter bar wears thin and leaks oil. Tx Jim

No oil in a HayMAXX disc mower to leak out.

HayDr,

For the enquiring mind, what is the design life expectancy of that cutterbar? I assume it's basically a maintenance free bar, or very low maintenance... but how long is it expected to last before the gears fall out of spec, bearings fail and strip the gears out? 2000 acres, 5000 acres, 20000 acres? Just curious.

Now that would be hard to predict because the operator has allot with how long any machine lasts. We often sell parts for Lely disc mowers 20 years old. Our HayMAXX transmission has advanced beyond the Lely Optimo transmission. 20,000 acres would be a start but I don't see 50,000 acres being out of reason. As in anything someone can wrap one around a telephone poll and reduce it's life. Our prototype test units have over 6,000 rock infested acres on them and we have not needed to replace a disc or skid yet.

I'd agree with that. There are people out there that can smash anything, anything at all.
I'd say 3000 acres is about all I've got on our older Kuhn bar right now, but it's never been opened, and is still going strong. It's seen quite a few discs and rock guards though. To be fair though, it's seen a lot more rock than most.

We've put over 2,500 acres on a New Ideal 5409 we bought used in '02 and other than regular maintance we've replaced one drive belt and the tarp which was ripped when we bought it.
