Last week I asked about using a subsoiler to bust up tree roots. We have recently mowed back a field that was grown over with gum trees and maples. Seems like most said it would plug the plow and lead to problems.

It was mentioned that a disc plow should be used, and the larger ones will shear a 3" diameter root.

What make & model plow disk should I be looking for? I'll be pulling it with a 90hp. tractor.

Thanks for any input on this.

A few web sites you might want to look at: [email protected] , [email protected] , universalgroup.com/dseries.com . first one is a company that makes big new disc-plows, second is a dealer that sells new and used disc-plows, third is also company that makes new disc-plows, but all 3 of these sites have good pics of the disc-plow. Also check out the photo ads for implements at this site, and ad # 28045 in older tractor ads. Funny how when someone starts talking about a certain implement they start popping up in the ads.

Hello again Dave,

Where is this site?

"ad # 28045 in older tractor ads."

I'd like to take a look at that ad.

Thanks for the response.

I did a little looking through various archives and cant even find a picture of a disc-plow anywhere. There is an international cub disc-plow listed on ebay if you want to see a little one with a big price tag. I think I will start looking for a new land plow (what the oldsters around here call it). I'll let you know here if I find anything.

Athens was the maker for Allis Chalmers disc plows a lot of these were snap coupler. Deere and IH also made these plows in 4-5 bottom setups. Have also seen Ford and MF 2-3 bottom setups. Don't know why they stopped making them in mid 60's as they were a good product for this particular job.

I have a Ferguson disc plow, and will it ever cut up some tree roots, and if it does not, it will roll on over them if they are too big. I pull it with a 35 hp tractor.

i was just wondering how long it would take a good dozer operator and a root rake to do the job for you. if you use a flat bottom plow get one with automatic trips on it so you want break something or jerk you off the tractor. with all the brush you apprently have i'd stick with a 4 bottom plow. if you could find an old bush and bog disk it might do what you want. i've seen some with 24 inch disk on them. what do you intend to do with the ground?

There's two ways I'd approach that, depending on what I was doing with it, and how hard it was to plow. The first thing I'd try is a moldboard plow. Not the old ones that can be found in just about every fencerow in the country. A good, modern, long body, with a lot of interbody clearance. There's a big difference, and you won't realise the difference until you use one of these plows. Look up Kverneland, and the AB 85 series of plows. If that won't plow it with the coulters running deep, not much will.

If they won't plow it, I go for the offset disc, and start chewing. It'll take time, and passes, and power, but it will chew the field up. The heavies disc you can get, the better. Something with weight for that job would probably equate to about 7' wide for the power you've got. It'll take many passes. That's why I prefer to plow. I dunno squat about disc plows, so this is how we approach that type of ground. Good luck.

I use a 35 horse D-14 to pull a 3 bottom, so your tractor ought to pull 7-8 bottoms. The most common bigger units that I have seen around here (MD) are 4-5 bottom. You should have more than enough ponies for that.

I bushogged 15-18'trees.

I think I'll hang the plow if I try to turn over the ground before slicing through all the roots.

Looking for a good match with a disc plow (Athens?) Using an Oliver 1850.
