Hew Holland 316 vs. New Holland 560,565,570,575

Hello,

Can someone help me? I'm looking at a used New Holland 316 baler that a neighbor has for sale. I sure would like to know how it compares to the New Holland 560/565,570/575. What did they update and why? I know a 316 would be cheaper than these newer models. I would like to know what to look for when I'm looking at this 316. Any advice?

We have been running a 316 since 1989. Love it to death too. Take care of the maint. items and it seems to run forever. It "did" have the bannana bale problem, but solved that about 10 years ago by drilling a new set of holes in the bale chamber and re-positioned the FRONT bale wedge on the LEFT side making both the left and right side wedges equal distance at the starting point in the bale chamber. After that adjusted the feeder tines on the rail and problem gone!!!! We also run a 570 and that has been one good baler too. Would buy either one based on our experiences.

the 570 has a packer fork the other doesn't,big help in eliminating the banana bale problem the red units had

The 316 may be the most durable model of NH balers. Or maybe because it was a very popular model here in the northeast. I worked on many 316's adjusting and replacing wear items. There are a bunch of them around here with a bazillion bales through them, still banging them out. Play in the plunger, wear in the feeder rack and its drive chain, and typical knotter component wear including knotter stack endplay are places to start looking. If it has a pan thrower look for failures in the bale case. I suppose the primary reason the 316 was replaced was the introduction of the rotary feeding system. The 316 and 570 were/are situated in the middle of the NH 14x18 baler lineup, buy a 570 will outbale a 316. Whether they will outlast one can be debated.

I believe the 316 was replaced by the 570. I think
the main update was replacing chains with a shaft
drive system on the knotters and feed system.
Other then that I believe they are pretty much the
same. I have a 1989 316 and it has been a fantasic
baler. I don't think it's missed more then maybe
20-25 bales over the years and the only thing I
had to replace was 2 hay dog springs and I made
no adjustments in all these years. The 316 and 570
are heavy duty models as compared to the 311 and
565. They come with super sweep pickup and you
can really run some hay in them. If you know and
trust your neighbor I don't think you will be
disappointed with the 316. It's one of the best
balers NH ever made.
