seems like i saw a rake like they are talking about in northern hydraulics book. its been a year or two back but i believe thats where it was. if you don't want to buy a baler ask a neighbor if you can trade out a litle hay hauling for him if he'll bale your hay

Hi , Do you have a tractor with a TPH ? Try and find a TPH side delivery . Better yet , for less than a acre go to any tractor dealer of any color and ask for estate size implements . My boss has this little pull behind 5 wheel rake ( ground drive ) he got for less than $500 . The thing might be to small for hay but I used it on his place before and it does do a windrow about a foot high and a foot across maybe more if it was real dry . It covers about 6' wide . Otherwise a real rake of the old type will be good too . But less than 1 acre isn't much manuevering room for a pull type . The problem is that TPH rakes are hard to find at least around here and bring more money . As for a baler - for that small space if money's not as important as time - find a JD 14T in good shape . This is all assuming you have a tractor of at least 20HP and bigger than a lawn tractor . I believe 20HP will run a 14T with light-medium windrows . Is it all worth the expense ? Your talking about over a grand of equipment not including a tractor just for less than 150 bales of hay per year on a good year . Will it pay for itself , probably not mechanically but it will pay off in effort expended and fun gained . I don't worry as much about the cost of things as the rewards of them . It's gratifying to me to spend money to have fun so to spend money to make hay instead of buying it from someone else or having them make it for me is repayment enough . I still get upset when the weather doesn't cooperate or I don't have the time or help to get it in before the rain comes but that's part of the fun . Last year I got heat exhuastion and a dislocated shoulder throwing hay and it is only a six acre field , some guy's do three or four times that by themselves . I do it after work and on weekends so I push myself way to hard for my physical condition since I'm going to be 50 in a couple months ( but that's not old ) . I can't wait for this year !! I've lined up extra help if they don't back out like most everyone does after they find out how hard and hot and dirty throwing hay into the mow is even with a elevator . It sounds like you're up to the challenge since you did it all by hand before . Good luck ! ...Randy
