I have a ford 8n and was wondering if theres a rake and baler small enough for me to bale a few square bales for myself. I need to bale at most a couple hundred a year.

My dad and I baled for years with an 8N and IH McCormick 45 baler - approx 60 acres per year. The 45 is about the poorest baler ever produced, and dad eventually bought a little Massey Ferguson which done a much better job and was easy to pull with the N. If baling would have destroyed the 8N my tractor should be junk, but it is still going strong other than a new clutch which was probably needed anyway. Provided you are no pretty level ground find a smaller capacity baler like the Massey, and take it slow and for a couple hundred bales you will be fine. It certainly is not worth buying a larger tractor for 200 bales as you can buy the hay cheaper. I now bale with a Ford 5000 on a Ford 532 or an old New Holland 850 big baler. Sure is a big difference, but we baled for about 10-12 years with either the 8N or a Farmall C because that was all we had and could not afford a larger tractor at the time. It was simply use what we had to we would not have hay as we could not find anyone to custome bale any longer and that was before the big rounders came along.

Just realized you asked about a rake as well, any standard rake, horse drawn or 3 point will work. Just check the width of the rake as that will make the difference not in raking but in baller operation. A 7' rake will make a smaller winrow than an 8' rake and you want the small rows for with the baler you would be pulling. Most of the horse drawn size side rakes were the 7' but like the Ferguson 3 point rakes that were popular and would work with your Ford correctly they made an 8' rake as well as the 7' model but get the smaller one to better size the winrows to your baler.

A lot of unanswered questions? First is your 8N a front mount distributor at 25 HP or the side mount at 28 HP, 3 horse can make a lot of difference, then do you have factory size rear tires or oversize as oversize will increase ground speed possibly too fast even in low gear. Then what type of ground do you have, flat, gently rolling, hills? Do you want to pull a wagon and if so what size? The big problem if the later side mount for PTO baler on flat or gently rolling would be how heavy the hay is and if ground speed would be way to fast. If you can control the speed low enough so the smaller balers can handle the winrow and don't have the hills to require a lot of power the late 8N could handle like a New Holland 66 ok, now if you ad a wagon it will be harder, especially a large heavy wagon. Our ground is gently rolling and for years pulling a wagon with a capacity of 125 bale we pulled a New Holland 66 with engine with a 2N Ford 23HP with no problems. The tires were loaded as that same tractor was used for plowing and disking. After heat strokes we went to a International 46 baler on PTO that is a larger capacity baller than the 66 and it had a thrower on it and 16' or 18' kick bale wagons we started out with a 38 HP John Deere AR pulling it and later we switched over to a 28 HP John Deere B (Same PTO HP as the late 8N Ford) and it handled it easier than the larger tractor. We never had to get down to low (first) gear with the John Deeres but the low (first) gear in your Ford is just slightly faster ground speed than second gear is in those John Deeres and those Deeres did not have live power and we never missed it. And balers do have a built in overrunning clutch in them so you do not need to worry about adding one to your tractor as you already have one unless somebody has messed up the drive of the baler. I am assuming that you have fluid in the rear tires of the Ford for traction. The 14T John deere is a slightly larger capacity baler than the NH 66.

We used a Farmall Cub to pull and Oliver baler with it's own engine for probably 12 years. 4 to 500 bales a year. Even with the motor on the baler it worked the heck out of the little cub but it did do it. I had an 8n for a couple of years. It raked fine but did not like the tedder at all. I never tried it with a baler as we do not have the Oliver any longer.

8N is a good sickle mower tractor or rake tractor but when it comes to running a baler forget it unless #1 the baler has its own engine, #2 you only pull the baler and not a wagon behind it. The 8N has 23HP and its just not big enough HP wise or weight wise to handle a baler well and more important safely. Ya there are some balers that it will run but it will be over worked and lead it to an early grave or you will be rebuilding it every few years. Most balers need 35Hp min. to run them well. Plus the 8N is just plain to light since a baler will be about 3/4 of the weight that and 8N is. I've pulled a JD-14T behind my 841 and it was all the 841 wanted to do so the 8N being 20HP less then the 841 would be worked to death

Your 8N will pull and operate any of the small Massey Ferguson balers, the #3, #9, and #12. If you get the PTO model, you MUST have an overunning clutch on the PTO. All 3 of these balers also came with a small (16 horse) Wisconsin as an option. As far a rake, Massey also made a wonderful little 8 or 9 footer that your tractor can easily handle. A dump rake will not wind the hay together, and it will not pick up or bale properly.

I have baled with a Farmall SA pulling a new Holland baler w/a Wisconsin 2cyl engine powering it. We still use that baler but no longer have the SA, have also used ford baler w/wisconsin engine.

From personal experience running a baler without a "live" PTO is a nightmare. And it would get worse with a tractor with limited low speeds and marginal horsepower. Can you say "abuse"

Any good older rake would work on an 8n. You would have to find something with an engine on the baler. The 8n would not have enough power with a PTO baler. Maybe it could handle a PTO baler. I know a couple of guys that bale with an 8n.
When I baled for a club one time I used my Farmall B. It is pushing 10.54 on the dyno. It worked ok put I do not recommend doing it. As far as models of balers I really do not know any that pop in my head right now.
