any one know if Allis Chalmers made a hay/grass forage chopper, and how much one is worth. 1 is down road from me, has been sitting for years. it is orange in color, has hay/grass/wheat head on, with exhaust like on JD forage choppers, but is more round than square. any help or info greatly appreciated. thanks

Got one sitting over the hill in the junk pile with a corn head on it. It belongs to my uncle, last filled a trench silo in 1961 with it. We did some green chop of some late corn in 62 or 63. It has a motor on it now, used it for several years with PTO, used several different tractors on it the last two years on pto used a neighbor"s U Moline. The grass head is in a barn at my uncle"s farm. As the one post said it was a pain to change.

Hey Jimmy ready for the big storm. I am going to start early this AM and hope to be done before it gets here. Glad I don't have to get out tonight. Be careful.

I hope you luck out Sid, I will be out in the middle of it plus we have a safety Meeting at Holliday Inn at 7:30 AM when I get in. I have had a Route change this is the first week on it. My first stop is Greenfield Auto Parts, so I come right through Miller.

I worked for a guy that had a 2 row AC chopper. I don't remember the number on it. It was a early 70's. We pulled it with a 4020 JD for 15 years not much problems. He did alot of contract work so it saw alot of corn. Good luck

If there is an AC chopper down the road from you, wouldn't AC have made it? The 'cut and throw' chopper was the first one they made, at least by the 50s, the model 50 was more recent, like somewhere into the 60s. The first had available a one-row corn head for cutting corn silage, a straight cut head with a reel, and a windrow pickup for cutting swathed hay. It had a built-in knife sharpener. Heads were miserable to change- had experience with that in the late 50s. Many farmers, like us, did not have a loader then to help with lifting, so it was a manual job. Forget the idea of 'driving' in to it. Chopping corn- had a tendency to cut long, since many stalks went in at an angle- but if was about normal for those days. 'Flywheel' cutters like the JD #6 were nothing like the choppers made a decade later.

You may be talking about an AC50 I think that is the number has a left side header/pickup has a flat to round spout. Has reel type cutting cylinder with no blower better known as a cut and throw. I think there is one in the photo ads section under AC implements I just saw it last night. I believe they were made in the 50"s and 60"s I ran one in the early sixties pulled it with a Farmall SMTA that"s about all it wanted.

Yes, AC did make their own, but I've only ever seen one in our area. Much more common is FOX. Could be either one.

Maybe another brand too like New Idea, but I'm not sure if New Idea ever made a pull type forage harvester.

We run a Fox 3000
