Two questions;

Is there must difference SAE 90 and SAE80w90 for a gear box?

Is there any harm flushing a gear box with diesel?

I flushed mine with diesel but I might not do it again. Before I did it I didnt have any leaks but after I did and refilled it I had three leaks. I think the diesel ate the old seals up or maybe just got all the gunk out and then they leaked. I did get a lot of old oil out and it probly needed the cleaning and new seals anyway.

Oil difference is strictly a matter of preference, 90w is straight weight, 80w90 is multi-grade. I would consider them interchangable unless there is otherwise a specific directive from the manufacturer.
As to the flushing of a gearbox with diesel? I feel that would generally be acceptable. Be certain that you can drain everything out. I would then fill the gearbox with with motor oil and turn it before draining again. Then fill with the proper weight oil. If there is any way to visually inspect the the inside it would be worth the effort before during and after.

The 90W is just that stright 90 and the 80W-90 is a little lighter oil and will be 80W when cold and 90 when hot. Not much differance in the two. As far as flushing a gear box it depends on the gear box. Some its ok and some its not
