Does anyone have any information on an 848 new holland baler with netwrap. Such as did it work well, what years did they have the net wrap option available. Were there any problems with it. Thanks for any info.

Clark,

The 848 is the smaller version (and less heavily built) of the 855/858 and one of the later of chain balers to be produced.

Had the floor roller, air bag tension and the "new style" chain threading. Could have been optioned for all the bells and whistles.

These balers are getting a bit long in the tooth and just are not for the "mechanically faint of heart". However, if you find one that is in good shape, it will bale trees if you want.

To be honest, I didn't know the 848 ever had net wrap... but I didn't follow the NH's too much, and still don't. I have used an 848 once when I was in a bind. It works, and it can be forced to make a decent bale. It can bale just about anything. Downside is that it's slow, and the chains can be expensive to replace. It wouldn't be my baler, but I wouldn't really consider anything but Claas in a round baler.

The 848 was the very last chainer that NH made.... probably up to the ~mid 90's. Dunno exactly. Don't let me discourage you if you like the thing....

My neighbor that had 80 acres next to me recently went to a New Holland 848. Watching him in the field it seemed to have issues every 8-10 bales with the wrap. I haven't asked him because he doesn't do question and answer very well. I noticed he would have to shutdown every so often, and go in to the baler before finishing the wrap.
The other issue I have noticed is the wrap on the bales is deteriorating. He doesn't shed anymore (hurricane took it all out), and the sun seems to be destroying the wrap. Most of the bales are now wrapless on top. They have been out since Sept 06.
I have never run one, and offer this observation. The bales are nice, and square shouldered though.

Thanks for the info E.B. I would be interested to know why he was having to shut down. I am just trying to decide if I should purchase a 848 with netwrap or if it is more trouble than it is worth.

Clark in WV I may have the wrong baler. I looked at a post from Allen in NB on a 851 with chain problems, and that's not the same series baler he has. If the 848 is chain this may be more like a 688/678 from the late 90's. It is belted, and a New Holland 100% sure. Has net wrap also. Sorry for the confusion. I'm 100% though on that wrap, some bales are turning lose on top. I believe the sun is working that wrap over. He also definitley has issues every so often at wrap time. I spent a whole afternoon watching him in case he needed a fire extinguisher, and I like watching equipment.

If I find out I will let you know, but you have to approach these questions carefully. Nice person, but they don't like to share problems with everyone in the neighborhood. Especially when this is a replacement baler for an old Gehl that went to the ground on fire-bad bearing in it. I know that for a fact because I am a volunteer FF that went to the call. The 848 he bought is obviously used, but makes nice looking bales. Post a question in tractor talk also. Good luck.
