I picked up a one winged 10 foot mower at an auction a few weeks ago. its an alamo A10 and i think its maybe 10 years old or less. Anyway, it did not come with the telescoping end of the pto driveline, and i cannot determine if its a 540 or 1000 rpm. I was told at the auction it was 540, but the end on the mower unit has the 1000 shaft. I've noticed on other mowers that they have the same end on the mower, but a 540 end for the tractor. Is that how that works on all of them, or is this a 1000 rpm unit? The 1/2 of the pto driveline that i have has a sort of star of david pattern in it, which i have not seen before. I called the alamo dealer in my area, and they couldnt tell me which it was, and they wanted 1,800$ for a new 1000 rpm driveline, if thats in fact what the mower takes.

Can anyone tell me through my description if I have a 540 or a 1000 rpm mower? And if it is a 1000 rpm, is there anywhere to get a good used driveline for hopefully much less than $1800???

Have you tried checking with Alamo? The model you have maybe out of production but they would still have info on it.

Every machine I've seen made in the last 50 years has a data plate with the serial/ model # on it. The company can determine all info from these numbers.

If that dealer was no more help than that, I'd look for a different dealer of your brand mower & get good advise from him.

I've operated a few rental machines that have had different splines on ends of the pto shaft, so it does happen.

Why not take cover off main gearbox and count number of teeth on both gears. I think that should give manufacturer enough info to determine pto speed. I've never seen a rotary mower that gearbox can be flipped to change pto speed. Rd balers and other equip, yes. TSC or similiar store should have parts you need for less than $1800. Tx Jim

It could be either, and you may be able to switch it by turning the gear box around. It's been done many times, and it allows a farmer to have either one without the manufacturer having to make 2 different gear boxes, and it's cheaper that way. That's probably why the dealer didn't know either.

If it's at all possible, try to spin it. The input will spin slower than the output on the gear box if it's 540, and faster if it's 1000.(speed reducer one way, speed increaser the other way) Provided the box can be turned around.

I cannot imagine a driveline cost of $ 1800 for your mower. If this were my problem ,I would go to a shop that specializes in building or rebuilding drive shafts.I have had a couple of new shafts built in Houston,Tx. for way less than $ 500.00 each.On the other hand you could purchase all the necessary components and fabricate the new shaft assy. yourself or take the parts to a competent welding shop.I think that Tractor supply has all the parts you will need.

Look at the tractor end of the gearbox and see what spline it has. The two don't interchange.

The short answer? I don't know.

However, I would suspect that it's 540. Most equipment that requires less than 70 PTO hp to drive it on a continous basis will be 540. Once the demand goes over 70 hp, then they switch to 1000 rpm drives to reduce driveline torque and size.
On the other hand, I've never heard of, or seen a company mix 6 and 21 spline ends on a shaft, but if you've seen this company do that before, I'll take that at face value. The only suggestion I can make beyond that would be to find out the blade speed or the tip speed of the blade. Then you can work back and figure out the shaft speed that drives the blade, the gearbox ratio, and thus the drive speed. There shouldn't be any need to buy an 1800 dollar driveline. The parts you need shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred, assuming you need an over running clutch built into the tractor yolk. HTH.
