Hi, I am trying to find a cheap 501 sickle mower to mow with this summer. I don't want to spend over $500 and I have found one for under this price. My question is will it fit my 2006 John Deere 5103 tractor without modifications? Does anyone run these on new tractors? Thanks Joel

I've used one for years behind both JD and Kubota. Rather than cutting the mower to fit the arms it is MUCH easier just to purchase some 8n sized lift arms. They are rather thin and nearly straight in comparison to the more modern stuff. 501 works great if adjusted properly. If it cuts poorly it needs adjustment. You will know when it's right. Owners manual is still available.

Depending on what you wan to do with it, Just get a trailer type PTO sickle bar mower. 1 hitch pin, PTO shaft and possiblt 1 or 2 hydrolic hoses or a rope to connect and you are ready to mow and can use that tractor fore something else without spending a lot of time removing and reinstalling the mounted mower.

I run a MF41 8 ft sickle bar behind my 3 year old JD5420 tractor. It fits great and works well. I think a MF41 or a JD350 are your best bets. Both go for $300 to $700 around here..in good working order.

many of the 501-601 ford sickles had the small pto shaft on them, so you might need an adaptor, also the way the braces of the 501 clamp around the lift arms they usually need to be widened so that they will clamp around the newer wide lift arms. not to big of a deal if you have a welder and cutting grinder. other than that it should work, but i never hooked one to your model tractor eather?

Mike is dead on with what he said. The PTO shaft is not much of an issue but the clamps for the lift arms are too narrow even for the more modern Fords like the 1520. I would think there would be a different mower out there that might serve the purpose better and would probably be cheaper.
I would look around for a better fit as those old Ford mowers can be a monkey puzzle to mount on newer tractors.
