Bush hog question

I have a shaft seal leaking on a bush hog. It's on the bottom drive shaft and I most likely won't be able to replace it with destroying the unit. What would happen if I packed the gear box with John Deere Corn head grease? Would that keep it lubricated enough to use?

Use 00 grease. Same thing Snapper uses in their gear box, but a lot cheaper in 5 gal bucket. Not every oil co has it must look different places for it.

Chainsaw bar oil too. It tends to flow when warm and cling when cold. works well.

Ive seen it done and ive ripped apart a gear box on a woods brush hog thats was filled with greese years and years ago. Thing thing is in bad shape so nobody tried to be careful with it. Its been through hell and back and when I needed to steel one of the gears out of it to repair a better mower the gears looked like new, you could still see the machine marks from when it was made.

Grease works good for keeping the gears lubricated but I'm not sure how well it migrates into the bearings. My Woods 5' had a leaky seal that was really disguising a shot bearing. It cut up the shaft and I had to have the shaft built up w/ chrome and finish ground to repair it. Give that lower shaft a good wiggle to see how much movement is there so you confirm the condition of the bearing before you pack it w/ grease.
Have fun and work safe.

I have known of people doing that but I never have (yet). I have a woods 15' that had a gear box leaking and had to put a speedy sleeve and a new seal on it to fix it but still had to pull the blades and stump jumper of to get to it.

Almost every brush hog I have seen has that type of problem. Its cause by the fact that they take a heck of a beating and that seal gets a work out plus some. My self I live with it and use 140W oil in my hogs and refill them when ever I use them, but I also don't use the ones I have more then maybe once a year if even that much

I would think that would work. I have tried that with several things with leaky seals. It usually works.
