Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to loosen the tension on the main apron chain on a NH 851 round baler. One side of the chain broke at the end of last year and I am wanting to reattach it. I have a manual but it is kind of vague.
Thanks, YC

have had an 852 since 1982--- thats the auto tie.

broke the chain several times before the buzzer finally broke... and then we put the heavyduty chain in it 17yrs ago.. only broke one time when I forgot to "listen" for the POP of the auto tie (Reba was singing in my headphones ok) lol

Thanks for the note. Was that heavy duty chain the CA557 size link. That is what is in mine.

Most of the time we did it like Allen said but we would run the chain around slowly to the end gate and open the door and use a wire stretcher or a come along to pull the chain together.

Thanks for all the help. Part of the problem is the chain is only broken on one side. It has gotten cocked in the baler and now on one side it is below some of the side rollers. I have been trying to take the rollers off then force the chain back up and reattaching the roller. I suspect that perhaps I will have to secure the chain then unhook the other side and fish it back above the side rollers before reattaching it. The thing is pretty heavy. Thanks again, YC

Use a come-along. Tie back 2 bars from where you want to work.

Yeah,

It's about 15 miles away as the crow flies. I gotta get over there and pick that thing up one of these days.

The old thing is a hydraulic tie.

Like everything else nowadays, just not good enough for most folks. Neighbor said he bought it a few years ago and never used it, then went to a new 567 John Deere.

So, this baler looks like it has spent the better part of it's life just setting. Heck, doesn't bother me to throw a hydraulic lever once in awhile. :>)

I`ve used the HY. tie , Ya can get used to anything . I`m stuck with the old elec. but it works fine , that push button sure is nice but thats a bit high tech for my old junk !! I`m still pullin a 850 with a 706 german . It all falls back to if it aint broke dont fix it , A diehard tractor and baler !!

I totally agree.

Think those old NHs are still the best way to go for the money invested.

'Course, I might be singin' a different tune if I ever have a chain that decides to exit stage left. :>)
