Vermeer 605G. JD 500 Round Baler ?s

I am looking for a bargin round baler.

I have been looking at a 1982 Vermeer 605G Round Baler, are these 540 or 1000 RPM pto? Can you Make a smaller size bale with it? Do these use a bale monitor or do you watch the gauge on the baler. Any feed back on this baler good or bad? Belts look good.

Also saw a JD 500 baler for sale, how are these units and can a shorter bale be make with it? I assume it makes a 6X5 bale. Any feed back good or bad? Bottom belt is new.

PS I used to bale with a NH 851 baler, just looking to get back into rounds again to make about 100 bales a year with out breaking the budget

So your saying that all the 605g balers came 1000 rpm but some got converted to 540?

They came either way, the gearbox can be bolted on either way to make it one or the other. Dealer ordered/ set it up how they wanted it.

Don't bother looking at the JD 500.

All the Vermeers around here came with 540 that I am aware of, but HayDr can tell you for sure.

F,G,& H series baler can be switched from 540-1000 by turning the gearbox around. There is more involved to the switching in other models. A 1000 bale does not need as high clutch torque setting as the 540 clutch.

The Vermeer 605G can be changed from 540 to 1000 rpm pto by reversing the gearbox an changing the pto shaft. A very good baler.

Unless you want the JD 500 for a collectors item RUN don't walk. That is JD's first attempt at rd baler and far from best. Tx Jim

The Vermeer wins hands down. It is an open throat, where the JD is a closed throat. There is no monitor for the Vermeer. Watch the guage and stop. You can adjust the pickup cut out to prevent you from making bales larger than you desire.

According to book, JD 500 was made 1974-75 and made a 5 x 6 bale. I have never used one but I don't think they are nearly as good as the Vermeer 605G. The Vermeer G is an open throat baler that makes 5x6 bales and it can make smaller bales, like 5x5. by just stopping the bale earlier. I don't know if a bale monitor was available for them or not, but I doubt it. If you get it, get a manual and follow it closely as to adjustments for reliable bale starting and pickup height. Keep a full set of pickup teeth on it. Check closely the condition of bearings, Vermeers use up bearings often IME. Try to hear the baler run before buying it. Hope this helps.
