International 46 baler

I have an International 46 baler that I want to use this summer to bale with. I tried to use it this past summer and it would not tie the bales. The twine would just be sticking up out of the bale about 2-3 inches. I adjusted the knotters, but it just wouldn't tie. Are there still new parts around for this baler I think I might be ahead to get new knotters or maybe just to find another baler. So does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Make sure that the bill hook is absolutly tight in the knotter. If you can wiggle the bill hook up and down any at all it will miss ties. We had a 45 baler and about every 800 bales I would have to dissamble the knotters and clean them. Make sure that the part that presses against the bill hook roller on the back of the knotter does not have any old grease or twine fibers under it. I was able on the 45 baler to remove a bolt on the bottom of the knotter frame,facing backwards, and flip the knotter assy upside down which made it a lot easier to clean. Those knotters are very fussy,not at all like newer balers. I hope this helps,Bill

Hi if you dont have the manual get one, binder books has them pretty cheap .there not a bad baler but if you have ever worked on knotters other than ih forget what you know because the knotters are totally different than jd or nh knotters and are more picky about adj. they will tie plastic twine but must be set up right . I spent 3 seasons learning the knotters on my 56 and when i sold it it would miss 1 in 300-400 bales . the most important thing i found on these knotters is the twine knife it MUST be razor sharp and adj. perfectly ,mine had replaceble knife bledes and were like 1-1.50 each so i just kept a few spares and when it would start missing bales i would change the blade and it would work great . hope this helps , good luck mike

I'd suggest getting a set of manuals if you plan to keep the baler. I have a model 46 that ties OK but have had past problems. Picked up some manuals and went through the whole baler - fixed the problems and now it works pretty well. I think some parts are available from the dealer but there are a lot of scrap bales for parts as well. Mine has a tendency to loose the springs that work the hay retainers and then it starts missing knots. Does your baler tie just an overhand knot or is there nothing on the twine?

There was no knots on any of the twine. I think that this baler might be just plan wore out and I might be ahead to find a better baler.

We fixed our problems with an old 46 by replacing it with a New Holland.

I bought a 45 at a sale in the eary 70's. Fooled with that thing all summer long and finally just took the twine out and backed it into a swamp!

I hope they improved the 46

That baler IS VERY SENSITIVE to worn slides on the plunger, if they are wore very much you will have tying problems. It has been 30 year ago we bought one and they had a whole extra plunger at the auction and we could not figure out why, turns out the slides are welded to the plunger and it was cheaper for the previous owner to replace the whole unit than to have the old slides cut off and new ones welded on. The 46 we bought had a kicker on and that is why we bought it. Before the 66 New Holland we had got the tying problems and everything else but the plunger slides were replaced and it still had the problem, found a different mechanic, said it was the slides, Dad said don't believe you but go ahead and replace, well after replacing do more tying problems. The New Holland did not have thrower and that is why it was replaced after 3 cases of heat exaustion and heat stroke in one year.

What kind of twine are you using? I don't know about IH balers but knotters are pretty much all alike and if you try to use nylon twine in a knotter designed for sisal it won't tie it.The bill hooks just cannot grab it tight enough.My JD24T won't tie poor quality sisal very consistantly but with good stuff it hardly ever misses.I got it from my dad and he tried nylon in it and said it wouldn't tie it at all.
