I am looking at an old haybine for $600. About a third of the rubber is missing off the rollers. How difficult and costly will it be to replace that myself? Anything else I should check for?

Dale, How about a NH 469 with all the rubber on the rolls and all new belts for $600.00. I've use the haybine for the last three years to cut 30 acres twice. Mechanically sound and well maintained. Located southwest michigan battle creek area.

Hey Matt! I could use that haybine here and can come look at it anytime you want. Sounds like just the ticket for my small amount of hay. Give me a shout if you want to sell it now rather than later. I'll come right down.

I'd be interested but not sure how soon I could take a look. Send your contact info to haybine at umich.edu. I'll delete that address when the spammers find it.

The rollers aren't easy to replace and they cost a lot of money if you get new ones. To me it would be a good parts machine. Last I heard a new roller costs around $1000 but that is just what I heard so that number maybe way off. I would make a phone call or 2 to a NH dealer and ask about parts cost before getting it.

I had a 472 haybine that needed new rollers. My local New Holland dealer quoted me $2500 to replace both rollers and the bearings. Instead I sold the haybine and bought a newer used 472 that was pretty solid all around. Once those haybines start to get some mileage on them they will nickle and dime you to death. It is better to get rid of them and get a newer one.

Guess I've been lucky. I have a 460 that I use every year and so far its not cost me much to keep working but then I only bale about 30 round bales a year so it doesn't get worked all that much

That price sounds right. I've got a new roller here at the house that goes on as soon as I figure out how get the old one out. I'm told that the best idea is to cut the old one out, but as a true shade tree nechanic (Oak) I'm not set up for that.
