Hesston 530 Baler----make firmer bales???

Case-IH 8420 same machine. Heard the Case_IHC dealer was cutting off the belts 3 inches to make a harder bale. Anyone tried that? It needs something. ALL other methods fail. 375 pounds is such a waste of effort.

I have baled with a 530 for 6 years, 700 bales a year. The trick to a firm bale is feed the hay into each side not down the middle. Make sure the windrow is narrow and tight. I can go as fast as the baler can take the hay and have a nice firm bale. If you want real tight string, run the tractor just off idle while tying, it only takes 30 seconds longer.

Best bale I made was baling without using a rake. Just baling behind the haybine that was set for narrow windrow in dry conditions. Hay was already flat and light so had good time to pack it. It was a farm machinery dealer that said to shorten belts 3 inches from factory length to get more tension.
These balers are easy to use and work great. You will not break belts or have bearings go out as not much strain on them. Just be ready for alot of bales. I'd almost say if you had hyd hookup you could run with an 8N Ford. Not much power needed.

I know several people that own these balers and they all say the same things, good baler, easy on HP, not much goes wrong with them, but the bales are soft and light. My neighbor drives in 1st gear(slow) with the RPM"s up and seems to think he gets a tighter bale. Ive never heard of shortening the belts to get a heavier bale.

I don't know what I'm going to do yet. My Hesston 5500 makes a 5x5 bale that is around 1,000-1,100lbs, but it pulls a little hard on my 42 pto hp tractor. I can pull a full bale though, as long as its not 95 out. I've never overheated, but it runs warmer than normal at 95 outside temp, if its in the 80's and I take the loader completely off I can stay cool. I am thinking about just keeping my bigger baler and installing an engine oil cooler on my tractor. My dealer says that will keep temps down more. I'd like to have an easier pulling baler, but at the weights you are talking about it'd take 3 of those little bales to equal 1 of what I am making now. If I could find a 540 or an 8430 I think I'd do that, they make a bigger tighter bale than the 530/8420 I am told, but they bring at least $3000 more than then smaller ones.

Ya, lets get some conversation going about these machines, I am thinking about picking up and 8420 Case-IH, wish I could find an 8430 or a 540 hesston, as they make a tighter heavier bale, but they bring more money too.
