I bought a Farmall Super M last summer and it came with a JD No.5 sickle bar mower attached. One day I decided I didn"t need the mower on anymore and I took it off. About a month later, I needed to mow my field so I tried to put it back on. This took me at least an hour. How do you guys do it? I finally got the bright idea of blocking the wheel on the mower so it didn"t shift around but how do you lift the front up evenly? My hi-lift jack helps a little but it seems there should be an easier way! :)

Years ago when I was using a farmall A frame sickle bar mower, I made life easy on myself and pulled the 8n with the loader on it around the back and hooked a chain to it and lifted it up and set it on the 300's drawbar. Made it a whole lot easier. Like someone already mentioned. If the cutter bar is layed out flat and the lift is in the down position it makes the process a lot easier to maneuver if any is needed. Shortly thereafter, I ran across a Ford 501 mower that I bought and saved myself a whole lot more time getting it all hooked up to run.

On my JD no. 8 mower, I place a hydraulic jack in the center of cross piece on the front and jack up high enough to back under. Unhook the same way and put a cement block and some 4x2's under each side to hold it up enough to drive out. You have to get jack centered just right so it will balance. My biggest problem is getting lined up straight when I back into it. Merry Christmas, Dont forget to say a prayer for our troops. Chris

Sometimes laying the cutter bar down will help. It's not as tipsy with it down and you can swing the mower around by lugging one way or the other on the end of the bar.Take the lift assist spring off before you lay it down, if it has one.Jim

Well, your mower should have a stand - of sorts - on each side. The one on the left is a leg and the one on the right is a lever type affair that goes down against the round bar which is attached to the cutter bar, and the lever goes past center and locks in place and these two should hold the mower up. I used a #5 on an M for many years and it wasn't any big problem to hook it up. As far as not being able to pick it up with a high-lift jack, the only other support you have is the tail wheel so it is going to tip one way or the other unless you block up one side. Hope you get it worked out.
