I have sold my 100+HP tractor as it was really too big for my needs and now I am wanting to downgrade my round baler size also, to where I can pull it with my 42pto HP tractor. A good friend of mine who is an implement dealer is trading in a Case IH 8420 that is supposed to be in good shape. This is basically a Hesston 530 in Case-IH badges. Are these balers any good? Do they make a nice bale? I am only going to bale 25 acres of rounds anymore as the rest of my ground I square bale and sell, so capacity isn't a huge issue? Let me know what you guys think of these particular machines?

As always, thanks for the input in advance.

Bought a new 530 in 1992. Weighted a load of bales, mixed grass. 375 pounds. Stack them and the bottom will be less than 3 ft tall soon. They are trouble free as light spring pull makes belts and bearings last. No trouble that way. I just hated the light bale. Tried different ways to increase bale weight but no luck. You will stop and tie often. Hope you have electric tie as rope will wear you out. I added that option second year ownership.
I thought of adding extra spring but fear side metal is too light and bearings will pull loose. have seen happen from overfill. Rip out of metal. Print this reply and look at it after hay season if you buy.

So are you saying you wouldn't recomend this baler or what? Is the next size up a lot better? The 540 Hesston or 8430 Case IH?

Yes That baler will work fine in your operation. The baler make bales 40"x52" 500 lbs. If you want to make high moisture haylage you will need to change the belts from Mini-Rough Top to the Chevron belts. This bale will make good bales, comes standard with a manual twine tie, electric twine tie is optional. You can not go very fast without the bale quality suffering.

Thanks HayDR, I was hoping you'd chime in. I am only going to make dry hay, no baleage. Speed is not really important to me, as my old baler is a Hesston 5500 which was not exactly a high capacity machine, especially if the hay was a little tough. I ought to be able to run as fast with an 8420 as my old 5500 shouldn't I? Maybe just have to make the windrow a little smaller? I like the idea of not having to weave back and forth as much also.

Luke,
You sold the Oliver? It was a sharp tractor. What did you get for it? I guess you decided to downsize instead of building a hay shed?

Yes I sold it. It is still sitting in my barn, but it is going to upstate Ney York in January. An Oliver collector bought it. It was really more machine than I needed. I am still going to build the hay shed though. I am just downsizing on equipment. I can get by without that big tractor and use my newer more reliable and fuel efficient tractor if I just had a smaller round baler. And some of my square bale customers will be buying some of these smaller rounds from me as well now because the smaller tractors that they have can handle the smaller bales. I didn't really want to sell, nor did my wife, but our first child is on the way and we decided it would be better to put the money from the tractor in our savings, than to have a massive tractor that only got used for baling sitting the rest of the year.
