I read through old postings on the NH495. If you recall i was using a hesston PT10(bought for $150) and the drive bearing went out. For what I had in it(cut 2 years with it) I just assume scrap and get an upgrade.

NH495. Found one for $1300 appears, from pictures to be in great shape. Everyone still pretty high on them? I only have 30 acres of hay, so not it won't be overused.

I am debating a 1990 JD 1600 14ft and this one.

I had to "retire" my 495 last summer as the sub-frame that holds the wobble box broke. To fix it would entail disassembling much of the machine - $3000 in labor.

When it was running I liked it as you could go thorugh a bunch of hay in a hurry and have a fairly wide windrow/swath.

I don't know much about the NH495 but, Scrapping a machine because a $20 bearing went out does not sound logical. That is unless you just want to spend the extra money and wanted to go to a larger cutter.

I do not disagree. I am moving from 15 acres to 30 and right now I am lucky to average 2 acres an hour with the PT10. 10 of the additional acres are free. No rent, they pay for seed, I get the hay. Hard to turn that down.

The PT10 has a number of issues, it cuts, but first cutting, the machine plugs more than not, but only on the far end. It needs a new cutter bar as well. Plus the time to disassemble the gearbox and replace the bearing not worth it. So for 150(it's cost) for 2 years worth of cutting, cost me 75 a year to cut hay. If I can only be so lucky with the next machine.

Hi Joe,

They are a cutting monster, but I'll give you some things that you can look at.

Right off the bat, I don't like the narrow cut; wish I could find a good 16' machine somewhere.

Ya have to keep that tongue greased from underneath so it will easily swing to narrow so you can move from field to field.

You've got to keep fluid in that left tire and make darned sure the inner lift springs are okay or else it won't float correctly.

Check the shoes; they wear in a hurry and are rather spendy. Check the wobble box and all the chains.

Allan
