Ward's Grainbuster Hammer Mill

I bought a Ward's Grainbuster Hammer Mill today. It is PTO driven and has a conveyor feed for the grain/ear corn. I had a man tell me it looked like a Case. Does anybody know anything about this mill? I am guessing the knives/hammers are about 8 or 10 inches wide. Old contraption looks to be in good condition and it runs out fine. It's mounted on a carriage. Any ideas?

Could you clarify something for me. Does it have a plain slide down shoot for the grain, if it has that then it would be a 10" or 15" mill, if it has a feed table with a belt conveyer on it then it is from a 14 1/2" to 18 1/2" mill as the smaller ones did not have the controled feed, only the larger ones had that. Wards did sell a PTO drive conversion that could be used with the mill stationary or with the cart they sold as an accory to it to mount the mill on for use with the PTO shaft for easy transportation to the corn crib. The smaller mills were 6" and 9" mills but were only electric motor driven and did not have the conveyer drag feed. Facing the feed table the model C mill had the Blower on the right side and was the 14 1/2" feed table mill, the model C mill had the blower on the opposide (left) being the same size and the 18 1/2" mill also had the blower on the left side. Models C, D, F, H, & R had a 13" wide screen, the L used an 18" wide screen, now to smaller models they used a 6", 9" or 9 3/4" wide screen and with the width and length of your screem I could tell you what models used that size screen

You have answered most everything I wanted to know....now I would like to know what your references are...I'd love to read them and get a manual for this mill.

From your description, it is a C model as the blower is on the right side when facing the conveyor. As I spent all morning changing the screen to a smaller size, I measured the screen and it is 13" wide. Evidently then, it is a 14 1/2" mill. It is PTO driven....has 6 belts on the drive sheave. It is all mounted on a factory carriage...the tag is still there but the numbers almost faded away..maybe if I get down with a magnifying glass, I can read them. I had a hell of time getting the screen changed. Apparently the former owner had put in the largest screen...about 1" holes. I changed to a 1/2" size. I like to never got the big screen out or the smaller one back in...tight as a wedge. The hammers/knives seem to be in excellent shape and somebody has kept it greased...everything is tight and in excellent mechanical order. I still wonder who actually made these...I am sure Ward's didn't. Thank you very much and Merry Christmas.

1957 Wards Farm Catalog. The model D, F, H & R all use the same width screen but I do not know what they look like. The C & D mills use a 37 1/4" long screen while the F, H, & R use a 26" long screen, If I could find my older catalogs they might have a picture of one of the other models but they are missplaced now.

I didn't do quite enough reading when I posted last. It is just the D & F mills that I do not know what they look like. The catalog shows the model C mill that you thought yours could be but the model D mill takes the same screen but the carrier is only listed for the models C, H, L & R mills, a different carrier is listed for the M-10, MA-10, M-15, & MA-15 mills with the only one with when you are facing the feed table is the model C mill with the blower on the right and drive on the left, the other mills, all from 6" up are in reverse of the C. The 6 belt drive is the light weight one fore 2-3 plow tractors (3 plow at that time would have been a 45 Max PTO HP tractor with the 8 belt setup for 3 plow and up tractors). It was also availibe with a loading conveyer that set at floor level and a wagon loading auger instead of the dust collector. Some spects on the C mill, 2 plow and up tractor, 14 1/2" width feed opening, 484 Sq. in. Screen area, 20 swinging hammers, 23" cylinder diameter, and had these screens avaible, 1/16", 3/32",1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4". With bager shipping weight was 1035# and auger 1055#. The price of basic mill was $329.50 with trailer at $24.50 & 89#, Pto drive without pullys or belts, $122.50 & 202#, belts and pullys @ $73.50 & 106# for the 6 belt unit with the * belt unit @ $88.50.
