How much horsepower is needed to use a New Holland 848 round baler?

Thanks to everyone for all the information and photo.

I now believe my JD 70 Diesel will work with the NH 848 baler.

Going by the manual for a NH 850 it says 55-75 HP. I use an Oliver Super 88 to pull my 850 and it does well. The S88 is rated at 55HP but the 6 cylinder torque power does make a differance. I tried a Farmall 450 on it which is also rated at 55 HP and it wouldn't handle it as well

You could probably get by with 50, but the smallest I ever ran it with was 60. If you're doing any amount with one, I think at least 60 would be the way to go... HTH.

I agree with Rod,

I have a little 849 and works well with a 70 horse tractor. But, when I put the 100 horse tractor on it, things just really work so much better.

Better and tighter bales, better ties, just an all around nicer job. They aren't "cookie-cutter" looking bales like the big John Deeres make, but I only gave $500 for the silly baler to start with and the cows don't complain one little bit. :>)
