Maybe this situation helps you with a gift suggestion for your dad for Christmas: How about a digital camera? They"ve come down in price a lot in the past couple of years, and with one your dad could take lots of "Before" pictures to assist him in the re-assembly phase of his restorations. I sometimes do that when I"m cracking open something I"ve never been into before; the photos have helped get things back together the right way on a couple of occasions. Plus, you can bang away and take dozens of photos if you need to, and if you end up not needing them, just delete.
