Planning on putting new blades and boots on the JD 750 drill this winter. Already bought the parts, but wandering if I can get another year out of it? Just wandering if many of you fellas have this drill, and how much wear do you tolerate before you rebuild?

In my opinion in reply to twomile, 12-13-2006 20:03:49
We probably try to run the boots too far. They are sort of difficult to get a good look at. Ours will wear out on the side facing the trench (opposite of the blade)and allow loose dirt into the boot with the seed. If you take a boot off and look at it from the side you'll easily see the wear pattern. The post about replacing the blades at 17" when the bevel is gone is the rule that we go by. A worn blade makes the boot wear more also. Be sure and check your the bushings where the opener's pivot on the bars. We found about 10 of ours wearing into the arm last year. That couldn't have been good for the alignment of the unit either.

Blades should be changed when the bevel is gone at 17", new blades are 18". The seed boots should be changed when the tail is worn off enough for the seed to come out of the trench cut by the blades.
